I have been considering the marantz 7002/8002 because i'm not sure if i want the video upconversion. Any of you have any prior experience with this make?

I have one of the first 605s to hit the market WAY back with they were up for preorder. I am pretty sure I don't have the newest firmware update for the 605. I was under the impression that the firmware update fixed some decoding issues with this DTS-HDMA stuff so I was going to wait until the PS3 could actually bitstream DTS-HDMA to the receiver to bother upgrading it. So since we are getting that capability in a week, do I need this upgrade?

I have the Marantz 8002. I went with it because I didn't want video upscaling, but wanted the latest features combined with great audio for music. This receiver is amazing (and does not run hot). I'm using it with PSB's, and I can't believe what it does for my music and movies. I love Paradigms too.

i would do the upgrade that fixes the dts ma issue when it is released in the usa. just so you never have to think about it again.

as far as the ps3 bitstreaming true hd or dts ma.....it will never happen

i have sony strdg 1100 and i love. i got it at pretty good price from amazon for und $500 not bad since the retail on sonystyle is like 900. it's perfect if your player is a ps3, it excepts 8ch pcm which is all you need since the ps3 can't bitsream. it also does 1080/24p which is a plus for me since i have the xbr4. everyone loves onkyo which is good but i don't plan on getting a stand alone for a while and bitstreaming doesn't matter all that much to me. i don't think you can really lose either way with onkyo or the sony except for price. the sony is a bit more unless you can find a deal like i did. good luck in your shopping

the video upconversion is kinda interesting to me because i have satellite and we don't have many HD channels in canada. but the technology just doesn't seem to be there from all that i have read.
The marantz piques my interest because it essentially doesn't touch the video and I imagine that more and more HD channels will be making its way to canada, as long as i'm patient enough

I think you migh want to wait and check out the new sony 920 which does it all 7.1 and dtshd-ma and truehd decoding it's suppose to be under $500 i think it looks promising only problem is it doesn't come out til the summer. http://gizmodo.com/360699/sony-str+d...1080p-and-24hz

For that kind of budget just for a reciever, I gotta say Denon would be your first choice, here's a link to the one I would buy with that kind of budget, I'm jealous. It's not even close the the max of your budget, but it's more reciever than you'll ever need... then they'll be money left over for a Definitive Technology SuperCube subwoofer!!!!!!!

I don't think the Sony 920 decodes Dolby True HD or DTS HD MA. The Sony Style website, under specifications, list all the decoders with yes underneath each one. The DD True HD and DTS HD MA don't have yes under them. I am going to wait until June to get the new Pioneer VSX1018THXK Which does decode both DD True HD and DTS HD MA for the same price as the Sony.

For 2500 bones you could run separates . . . the Integra DTC 9.8 is 1600, leaving 900 bucks for an amp. Emotiva has a nice 7 channel for 500, which gets great reviews. I would think this is your best option.

That's not entirely true. I took this from the 820 page (basically the exact same receiver $200 cheaper, so $399): "the STR-DG820 decodes the latest audio formats from Dolby® Labs and DTS® making this model fully compatible with Blu-ray Disc". Check it out here: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665364791

I have looked at the page before they took the 'yes' off below trueHD and DTS-HD. If you look closely at the picture, there are indeed logos of both TrueHD and DTS-HD at the bottom of the receiver.

The STR-DG820 would also be a good choice: at only $399, you get 4 HDMI inputs and full decoding of all available audio formats. But I agree with the other guys. With that much of a budget, you might want to get something a little higher-end.

EDIT: The 820 will be $399 at launch (4/30), and the 920 will be $599 at launch (this summer).

is there any difference between an onkyo605B and just onkyo605?

ive seen these two "variations" ..or is it just that some sites leave off the "b"?

EDIT: i think "b" stands for black, since i see some with "s" as well for silver...is this correct?

honestly, check local hi-fi shops and ebay and search for some 2007 models, you can get a better one for cheaper and you aren't paying for stuff you dont need. In that price you could get a really nice Denon or a Marantz.

That would be great if it were true. However, doing a comparison between the Sony receivers that have DD Ture HD and DTS HD MA and the 920 and 820 Neither of them have yes in the boxes like the 4300 or the 2100.

I originally thought the same thing until I started doing the comparisons. I still am not sure which is correct. With a PS3 it wouldn't matter anyway but for future Blu-Ray purchases it would be good to have all the decoders on the receiver.

I know pretty much nothing about amps, but the concept intrigues me. Does it go after the A/V receiver?

You are correct. "B" is for black and "S" is for silver.

I'm looking at the Onkyo TX-NR905 or TX-SR875. The 905 does HDMI switching...what will that buy me? Is it worth the extra cash?

Does anyone currently own these or similar brands? Any recommendations would be appreciated.
