Depending on what turntable you have (or maybe not!), you might be better off getting an external phono preamp. I imagine even one of the cheaper ones would be better than the sort of thing one would find in a receiver.

Going from memory here

705 2 HDMI in, 805 3
705 2 zones available, 805 3
705 100 watts/channel, 805 130
Both are THX 2 certified with dts-HD MA and True HD on-board decoding (although there had been a reported destructive "popping" issue with MA decoding... don't know the current status of the problem... use the search hread to investigate)

Cheers, Doc.

I Love my Onkyo. And the speakers that came with it are the bomb!

Yeah, they aren't as bad as people say. I would know too. I have the same HTIB. HTIB's from Onkyo are easy to use and excellent quality. If you want pretty, you can always go to walmart and pick up a $200 HTIB from Samsung. If you want quality, look at the Onkyo SP-908. The SR-800 isn't bad except for that it has no real HDMI inputs. I need to upgrade my reciever!

i would agree if i was an audiophile. thought about getting Pro-Ject Debut III
(non usb) and at about 300 its cheap as far as audiophile turntables go. probably should have gotten that instead of my hd a30

Yery true on that last point!

Pro-ject make some nice stuff, especially for the price. The stuff I look at is in a much higher league, but there are some good value produtc in the sub-$1K price range.

Also . . .

The 805 uses Burr-Brown Digital/Analog converters. If you have the speakers to appreciate it, they do offer a noticable improvement in SQ.

One other thing that you might want to note is that the 805 is MUCH more massive than the 705. It is about 2 inches taller, 4 inches deeper and nearly twice the weight. If space is a consideration, keep that in mind.

I would have an 805 right now if it would have fit inside my cabinet. I ended up with the 705 because it fit.
