I just want a player that can handle less-than-pristine disks and the BDP-S301 doesn't see to fit that bill.

While I'm deciding what to do I've been using my old SD player and it hasn't choked on a Netflix disk yet.
I would agree, my BDP-S500 was only freezing on Netflix Blu-rays until I got the standard definition version of There Will Be Blood. (I disabled the BR option in my Netflix account while I figure out the freezing issue). The SD disc froze about 65 minutes into the movie. At that point, I knew something was wrong. I just sent it back to Sony Support Tuesday. We'll see.

Sorry to hear about these problems. I have had the 301 since November and average 18 discs (bd/sd) from Netflix per month. Not one freeze, and some of them have been really scratched.

Could it be a heat issue? Got it well ventilated?

I don't think it was a heat issue but I can't be certain. It sat in a bookshelf with 3"-4" free on each side, about 4" on top and maybe 2" in the back.
