A pop can come out of nowhere and scare the s*** out of you. Fortuanately, the many times my speakers have popped, they continue to maintain excellent SQ at any level, unless they pop that is.

This might be very dangerous to your ears and speakers too. Something needs to be done. What about the encodes of disks you are playing. DTS HD?

I really don't know much on these speakers.

Edit: Wait what can you play on your Onkyo. Remember that if you try playing certain audio you'll get that. But I still don't see it doing that to the Incredibles. You said it does it with others. Did it start with the others first and is now doing it with this?

It's not just old movies. On some explosion scenes, like on Live Free or Die Hard, it'll pop. Maybe it's the crappy DD soundtrack. I'm sure my speakers can handle the power. Maybe the reciever isn't providing enough power? I am only guessing at this point. (I don't think that's the problem^^)

Not yet. I am dying to upgrade my Onkyo reciever. I can only get the core soundtracks now.

It could be a certain frequency, because I've heard my Technics hit very low without distortion.

I play all but HD audio soundtracks(I can't). I normally use DD and sometimes DTS. I actually don't remember how long ago the popping started but all I know is that it isn't normal.

Maybe your wire is too thick and it's overloading the speaker causing it to pop (?).

Yes, I guess it could be the VC slamming into the backplate from being over driven...

To correct it, turn down the volume - you are overdriving your speakers and could be damaging them.

Your speaker is controlled by a coil of wire called the voice coil (VC).

When you pass an audio signal through the voice coil it interacts with the magnetic field that the permanent magnet on your speaker produces which causes the VC to move up and down which makes the speaker cone move and and actually produce the sound you hear.

When you overdrive your speakers, you are pushing the VC outside of the magnetic field of your speaker's magnet which causes it to lose control of the VC movement. So you are basically pushing it well past that point of control causing it to pop by slamming into the backplate or exceeding the speaker's surround in extreme causes (the surround keeps the speaker cone centred).

For those that want the technical stuff, the max distance the VC can travel is part of the Thiele-Small parameters every speaker has. This parameter is Xmax and specifies the maximum distance the VC can travel before you start pushing it outside of it's design parameters.

For example, my Earthquake Magma 12 sub has an Xmax value of 22 mm. Meaning it can travel up to 22 mm peak-to-peak before putting the VC windings outside of the magnet's control. This is fairly long meaning that the speaker can move in and out more without damage. This means it can displace more air.

Another example is the Infinity Reference 1220w with an Xmax of about 12 mm. This basically means that this speaker has about half the travel distance of the Earthquake Magma 12.

Possibly clipping caused by under-powering? What are you feeding them with?

The more I read these posts, the more I get. Why can't it work like my old 605? Maybe it really is my 705.

Is the problem new or did it started recently?

If it's only your right speaker that does this, check if the level of your right and left are the same. If they are the same, then I'd say most probably that your right speaker has suffered some damage (maybe your crossover frequency is set too low, this could damage your speaker over time).

If it's only one speaker I don't think that the amp is the problem to check this your could plug the left speaker in the right speaker out from your receiver. If you don't have the popping sound, then you know for sure that it is the speaker.

Maybe. I am using 14 guage wire.

That should make sense but, it doesn't make sense that I can turn it up louder and get no pops or distortion. I am starting to think its the amplifier.

I can't really do that reliably since it occurs randomly.
