The ps3 can't output bitstream, set it to linear pcm. Also your Onkyo reciver will only show up as mch pcm but if you press the triangle button on your joypad and select info you will see that it's dts-hd ma

I am getting some speckles on the dashboard now, seems like some of the color information not coming through entirely during the handshake process between the ps3 and my tv (samsung lns4696d) if i turn the tv off & back on it goes away, but if i put on a movie and go back to the dashboard, the speckles return....

Topher90 is spot on. The PS3 is decoding the DTS-HD MA and sending it to your Onkyo as PCM, so you are hearing DTS-HD MA. Your receiver shouldn't and won't register anything other than multichannel PCM.

I know what you mean. People have been so helpful on this site that I'm starting to look for answers here before I call tech support.

I've found answers here to questions I didn't even know I had lol

when i toggle between the normal dts track (1.5 mbps) and the dts hd ma track (avg about 6.5-7 mbps) the core dts track is louder. why is this? i am using the ps3 and i have it set to linear pcm when i have the dts hd ma and bitstream for the core track

I am assuming it does because it says dts-hd master audio right on the receiver. Am I wrong to assume this?
