I personally recommend a Yamaha or Denon reciever, because the couple Onkyo recievers I've tested has a known audio drop out issue while watching a BD movie with DTS-HD Master Audio. But Onkyo is claiming if you update the firmware the issue will get resolved and there should be no problems

They're not just claming, it's very well known that this takes care of any popping issues and there's a separate DSP firmware upgrade too.

I'd recommend the Onkyo's because the DAC's in the 805, 875 and 905 are only matched by Denon and Yamaha in the $5,000 RX-Z11 and 5308CI models.

Thank goodness somebody said it! That is the biggest reason to go Onkyo.

Also, those popping issues have only been said to affect the early model 605's. If you buy a new 805 it should be fine. I have had absolutely ZERO problems with mine since last October.

AQ = Biggest reason NOT to get Onkyo.....

I'd check out Yamaha and more-so Denon.

I'd disagree. The dynamic range of the PCM1796 DAC is the only one capable of matching SACD's dynamic range of 120dB.

For the Yammy's and Denon's, again, you have to go to the $5,000 receivers to get this. Anything less has the PCM1791A chips which are less than half the price and have 113dB of dynamic range. The PCM1796 is a better chip.

The audio performance of the TX-SR805, 875 and 905 is formidable. Having direct DSD>Analog also helps.

This won't matter so much on 24/48 sources like most Blu-ray movies, but where music is concerned the TX-NR905 is an excellent choice indeed.

Of course the DAC is only a small part of the picture, but it should not be ignored.

The Onkyo's also rate what they post on the test bench, just like the Denon. There are no problems driving all 7 channels.

Sound Matters Most!
Before deciding on a receiver you plan on buying based on the specifications you have read, take some time to listen to the product thoroughly. Many mid to low priced receivers packed with features, nice lights and cool face plates suffer from a common problem, terrible preamp/processor sections. This can easily be ascertained by asking the salesperson to leave the showroom for a few minutes so you can be alone with the receiver to get to know it better. At this point, the room is quite silent, hopefully. Switch the receiver onto a 5 channel mode with no source running. Turn the volume control up about half way and balance all channels using the test tone. Now walk around the room and listen for airplane noises. Assuming you are not near an airport, you should not hear any. If you do, than this is a good indication that the receiver has a noisy preamp section. In a seated position midway between all speakers, listen for excessive background noise. Usually the rear channels are most obvious. If you can clearly hear hissing or white noise from any speaker while seated, than avoid this receiver as it will annoy you in the long run when playing 5 channel sources.

If the receiver passed the noise test, move on to quality of the DAC's and ADC's. You should compare the fidelity of sound of the internal DAC's with that of the CD/DVD player you are using in your system. When switching from analog to digital inputs on the receiver, you should notice similar or better fidelity. If you don't this may imply the DAC's in the receiver are not as good as the ones in your CD/DVD player. This may present a problem to those who enjoy listening to DSP modes or want to really reproduce excellent 5 channel DD/DTS surround. If the DAC's in the receiver are weak than you may have to rely on the DAC's in the CD player while listening to music in DSP modes. Doing this would involve a D/A conversion from your CD player to a A/D conversion in your DSP processor and finally a D/A conversion before the signal gets amplified. This process will manipulate the source 3 times as opposed to one. This should be avoided if possible as it will result in loss of fidelity.
One look inside will let you know you shouldn't have any worries with power or noise.

Looks like these guys know what they're talking about. I'd go with the 805.

I'm not an expert by any means, but I've had my 805 for a couple of months and I haven't had any problems. The audio sounds phenomenal. I've never heard the yammy so I can't comment on it-sorry.

I really could care less about the heat. Unless the receiver can't handle over five feet of ventalation, then it'll be fine-I'd hope. I was just reassuring myself that the 805 was a good choice plus I just wanted some more opinions.

By the way, anybody know where I could get another subwoofer (see my sig.)

It would appear that way but all that is really is a bunch of useless crap.

No receiver is perfect or without issues.. The 805 does have heat problems and uses a lot of power.

Well, I didn't really care too much about the heat problems.

Truth be told also is that no one can tell the sound difference between receivers. There was a report that you can google called the blind test..

The only thing you might be able to hear is distortion but that doesn't become a problem until you hit HIGH volumes... Probably above 60-65% on the volume setting.

At that point, I think my Technics would be blown. I think I'm going to get the 805. I still want to know where I can get that sub!

I only have 5 inches above mine and it is fine. That is all the manual calls for as well.

I also listened to the Yamaha RX-V1800 and the Denon 3808ci when I was shopping for a new reciever. I was skeptical of the Onkyo as it was the cheapest, but it definitely sounded the best to me. Makes sense as it uses the best DAC's. The only drawback on the unit is its analog upconversion.... but if you don't ever use analog sources then it doesn't matter.

I've heard that the 805 has HDMI video problems where it deinterlaces 1080i signals to 720P signals and causing video uglies. Would this affect me?

Not being mean but joking "do you really need another one" just upgrade your speakers to bigger ones.

My speakers aren't small if that's what you're saying. I'm just looking for smoother, crisper bass with two subs to make it sound better.
