This is just part one for the years up to 1963 to 1972 and it will be a 10 disk set. I don't think $100 will even be in the ball park. But 10 BD disks seems like a hell of a lot unless there is going to be many concerts on there as well. Talk, are all the disks BD or a combination?

Trying to look if they are all BD disks and it looks like they will be. The entire scope of the project which I am assuming it going to be yaers and years is 5 volumes, 50 BD disks:

From: http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/In...nce-62909.html

50 Blu-ray Discs

The project could signal a broader use of the high-definition technology known as Blu-ray, which was developed with Sun's Java Latest News about Java programming language, and which emerged earlier this year as the global standard for high-performance video from Sony (NYSE: SNE) Latest News about Sony and other companies.

It's unclear how many fans will have the equipment, and the time, to enjoy such a comprehensive archive. Young said he hopes fans will spend hours exploring an interactive time line, playing classic hits and unreleased tracks, while examining contemporaneous films, photos, recording notes and other documents.

With up to 50 gigabytes of storage, Blu-ray discs have five to 10 times the capacity of DVDs, which in turn can hold far more material than CDs. Young, who lives on a ranch off Skyline Boulevard in San Mateo County, Calif., is planning a series of five volumes, each consisting of 10 discs. He promised that fans will be able to download additional material from the Internet Over 800,000 High Quality Domains Available For Your Business. Click Here. as it becomes available.

It appears that it's going to be mostly audio and while whatever song/concert/album you choose to listen to, you'll be able surf around and view additional video content like pics, lyrics and notes at the same time.

Neil's announcment stressed the interactive features, so expect it to be very hands on and not so much like a flowing soundtrack with accompanying video. Although at the same time, he was there to talk about Java's role, not the entire concept of the Archives. So it could be a blend of interactive and non-interactive features.

Bottom line is we just don't know yet.

Check out the video Talk posted: here. There is a nice preview of what the discs will be like.

There's a video of his JavaOne appearance and preview of the release here.

All BD, likely all BD50. Most of the tracks on this volume don't have live video (due to their age), so the video associated with the song is of a record player or other playback device placed in the location where the song was originally recorded. See the previously-referenced video for examples.

Thanks, it didn't really sink in when I first read that announcement until I looked through some of the other stories and realized the scope of the project. I am just stunned at 5 archive installments of probably 10 BD's each. Hopefully each installment isn't 15 years in the making like the first one...I hope for 1 a year but I am guessing not so fast.

I had just bought the live Massey Hall live recording CD last weekend and then noticed it as part of the first archieve...dohhh But it is great performance, listened to the whole thing last night. Now can't wait to get all the rest of these on BD.

thanks for all your contribution to the forum and format.

Here's a new article on this from Billboard:

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/..._id=1003830076

Quote:
This fall, the "Archive" series will begin to roll out with a 10-disc set of performances from 1963-72. Contrary to previous reports, and Young's own comments in the media, the set will be available in standard CD and DVD configurations and not exclusively in Blu-ray, but Young says he hopes fans will take advantage of the state-of-the-art format.

"Blu-ray is the future," Young tells Billboard. "It sounds the best, the navigating system is the best. I've made a lot of CDs and we've made a lot of DVDs, and Blu-ray technology is so far superior to anything else. The fact there aren't many players out there now doesn't meant that much to me, because it is the future, so I would rather focus on what's next. If you were to get a Blu-ray of the 'Archive,' you would get the best."

Young is also confident that the next volume of the "Archive" series will come in short order. "We've developed the platform," he says. "We have the format. We have everything together to do it. It just took 15 years to develop this platform and also to wait for technology that was strong enough for the platform to stand on."

Wink Neil Young Archives On Blu-Ray

Has anyone heard of a current release date for this? Or does anyone actually know what this package will entail? I know Young is a curmudgeon when it comes to finally releasing his archival material, but I've only been waiting 18 years for this thing since it was announced.

he's not doing blu-ray anymore i don't think. i think it's just going to be standard cd/dvd. most of his fans were plenty pissed off so that may be why he chose not to go with blu-ray. which makes me think that blu-ray adoption is a long way off for the masses.

I just did another search, Warner Music, and Neil Young's website (not too user friendly) and I still don't show a pre-order, or additional details for the first archive's release......

anyone have additional info on this?

I see this site still lists the release date as Nov. 4th.

That sucks to hear it's coming out now on CD/DVD set.
8CD's/2DVD set.

Boo! I liked Neil's attitude better in May 2008 when he was still saying "they'll do whatever they want to the quality, but it won't have our name on it"
