I'm not sure what this means. showing what would actually happen in a given situation is not the same as social commentary. if you think something like that happening wouldn't cause loads of people to pull out cameras, including cell phone cameras, you're nuts.

when something as artificial as that leads to someone hating a movie (or loving it) I have to question if you really watched the movie.

like the other fans here are saying, I thought it was a unique take on that sort of film. also very non-typical hollywood in several ways. It was a fun ride in the theater and when I got it on dvd and watched it at home it managed to affect me all over again. can't wait to double dip on blu.

it's not official what it is, really. there is a cool interview with the writer that you can find on a screenwriting q&a podcast. he says that essentially none of the advertisement stuff or "info" that came out before the movie has any baring on the movie itself. interesting to see the different creative influences take different sides on a movie's canon.

This is a movie you have to watch in a movie theater, anything else for the first viewing experience will not live up to what you expect from it. Also if you have motion sickness, stay away!

Why didn't they film it with a camcorder that has built in Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS)?

I loved it, seriously one of my favorite all time movies. I think some of you just watched it from the previews or something and were left scratching your heads. The movie was much better if you followed the whole viral campaign that started months before time, because the background and characters were that much more "real".

Had Cloverfield been filmed from a stationary camera it wouldn't have been the same movie at all. It would've been just another cheesy monster movie, but the effect of staying with the cast the whole time, and the gritty amatuer camera work tied it all in.

Really great movie. I was anticipating it for six months and was adicted to the viral. It delivered on all levels for me. I just can't understand how people can hate it. There were realistic characters. The sfx were great. It was action paked. What else do you want? People just want the samething over again. They're too lazy to figure it out for themseves. All I know is, on June 3rd, I will be at my best buy as soon as it opens. Then walking out of there holding my copy of Cloverfield on bluray, happy in the knowledge that my life is complete.

How can SFX be great when showed with jerky hand held cam anyway?
The characters were unrealistic, stupid and annoying at that. Going to save someone few blocks away in this situation and still wearing 4inch heels? I don't know any dumba$$es like that. That girl who walked away just fine after being skewered with steel rod through her body was very realistic too.
Also, how in good faith can you describe Cloverfield as "action packed"? It was packed with utterly boring party scenes for more than half of it.
Well, at least we didn't have to see someone's runny nose from below like in blair witch.

It's not exactly original and does not break any new ground what with the shaky camerawork focusing on a small group of individuals, the monster whose obvious parallels to Godzilla movies does not need explaining. I even thought that the small creatures which attacked the people were miniature versions of the creatures from Starship Troopers.

The worse thing for me is that this film has been left open for a sequel.

I am guessing that there will be people out there who enjoyed and loved this film, what interests me now is how one would extoll the virtues of this film.

My mind is open and awaiting interesting discourse.

._.
Disgusting what studios put out these days...I'm watching paint dry right now and I'll tell you , depending on the angle you watch it dry from - it is more excting than CLOVERFARCE....

So, by your logic, no films that are not "original" or "break new ground" shouldn't be made since you're puzzled as to why this film was made? Put a little too much thought into a popcorn flick, buddy?

Watched it again last night on SDVD to see if it was worth purchasing on Blu. I think it is. The sound on Blu will be amazing. Can't wait.
