Is it just me or does anyone else find the OP's suggestion that Modest Mouse was mainstream and yet listed Radiohead as 'indie' funny as hell?

I prefer bands that don't have record labels pushing their every move and screwing them out of money, thanks.

Actually Modest Mouse is with Epic Records. What is Radiohead's label? That is what I meant by "indie", so actually your comments are what is "funny as hell". I never said anything about "Mainstream". Most the other bands are with Sub Pop Records, or a label of the same sort.

ehh... he meant no harm. in this day and age to be quite honest, it's hard to find a band thats not afilliated with a major in some way shape or form.

Radiohead {so far as I know} is only mainstream and "indie" because they cut off affiliations with their record label.

Otherwise it'd be yet another band that we really shouldn't have heard of.

All depends on where you live amigo, I live in Toronto and there are a ton of REAL indie bands if you look around. No label = real rock and roll.

Anyway, my only point in my OP was that Modest Mouse is my favorite "indie" band. They can't really be considered that any longer because they are with a major record label. Neither can DCFC, but all those bands are still considered "indie" rock. You are really nitpicking at this point huh?

I just prefer 'indie' being actually INDEPENDENT is all. No offense against you.

Do you think they don't want a label?

They want to make money like every other artist.

By having the label screw them out of money?

There's an interesting book written by a drummer {I'll be damned if I can remember the name of it right now} from a fairly good band and he mentions that on tour the record label rep would take them out to dinner every night and take others out to dinner with the band and always pay with a credit card from the label, it was later explained to him that the label puts aside certain bits of money for each band and that money was used to pay off the credit card, literally speaking he was feeding them {and others, not to mention himself} with their own money without them knowing about it.

I'd prefer to see bands make it, without record labels.

I would think they would want some sort of label, Sub Pop being a good example for these type of bands. The only recent band just starting out to have success without a label, has been Clap Your Hands Say Yeah...

Dude im from DC, believe me I know what real INDIE rock is. You can't get much more indie than Dischord and all the family tree like labels that sprouted from it.

but as much as I truly love 'REAL' indie rock the sad fact is that most of indie bands I love have always broken up after a few releases because theres only so much they can do without some kind of major support.

At least thats the way it used to be. I still make music for myself and whoever may like it and have a lot of friends still scraping and fighting the good fight. Now in this digital age it's getting easier for bands to bypass anything even remotely major when getting music to the people but it's still insanely hard to make a living from straight rocking without any kind of label support wether it be from a major or an independent.

My current order:

Arctic Monkeys
Black Keys
Kings of Leon
Superdrag

I think they are all on "indie" labels.
