id have to go with Empire Strikes Back. The blockbuster was released the year Reagan was elected and inspired him to make a missle defense system in which he named it "Star Wars" after the movie. The missle defense program that the US had, meant Russia needed to try to match the United States technology, because after all this was the cold war. However, the project was infeasible and the russians threw billions at it, only to bankrupt the country and end the cold war.

Yep, thats the answer its Teh Empire Strikez Back!

A poll about 1980's iconic movies that omits SCARFACE (the remake) is not a worthy poll.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off without question. It still remains one of my favourite films of all time. I've watched it numerous times and my enjoyment never decreases. Plus nice 80's soundtrack and that wonderful Ferrari (the UK's Chris Evans recently paid £5.5 million for one!).

Even though I like both of the '80's SW movies, I had to vote for E.T. That movie changed a lot of things.

Real Genius for me. It had all the elements, including the 80's song that defined the movie. I mean, who didn't feel good at the end when Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is playing and all the kids are playing in a mountain of popcorn? I still get a lift to my day whenever I hear that song, and I think of that movie.

I don't muck with other people's polls, so I rarely say something not there, but now I think of it, if 'Stand By Me' had been there that might have gotten my vote.

The John Hughes films I think "defined" the 80s but I think movies like Star Wars, Back to the Future, E.T. and so on created a new level of Pop Culture that came from the 80s.

I wouldn't say it was just one of those movies, maybe a combination of all them. There were so many good movies in the 80's. Here a short list of what I think is missing from that list, some have already been said.

Top Gun
Beverly Hills Cop
Beverly Hills Cop 2
48 Hours
Deadly Friend
Dirty Dancing
Fatal Attraction
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Field of Dreams
K-9
The Legend Of Billie Jean
Little Shop of Horrors
Coming to America
Commando
Cocktail
Crocodile Dundee 1&2
Airplane
National Lampoons Vacation
National Lampoons European Vacation
Back to the Future
Die Hard
Many Friday the 13ths
Childs Play
Fast Times At Ridgemont High
Porkys
Revenge of the Nerds
Big Trouble in Little China
Big
Adventures in Babysitting..... I could go on and on..

What about comedy's like:

Caddy Shack
Fletch
Vacation

And.. when I was in Jr High EVERYONE was talking about Brooks shields in Blue Lagoon, which helped launch the whole super model craze. (BL horrible after 20 years though)

Coming up with a list that "defined" the 80's is rather difficult. It was in many circles the decade of obcess, decadence and living fast. Pulp culture movies like "To live and die in LA" showed this type of live fast attitude.

And what about the "new rat pack" in St Elmos fire... a HUGE hit in the 80's?

Yeah you can't just lump everything into two categories, I’m beginning to doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!

While E.T. was a defining in it's popularity and had some cultual referenced to my generation, such as Eliot showing ET his action figured and the older kids playing D&D. This movie could have come out in the 70s or the 90s and been mostly the same.

Breakfest Club & Ferris Buler were so 80s, they look 80s they sound 80s.
Personally I liked Ferris better but I think that Breakfast Club was the movie I saw most while it was still popular. My mother used to babysit my cousin who was a few years younger then me, and evey time she came over she had to watch Breakfast Club, It had been probibly 15 years since I had last seen it when it was on TV last year, and I could still recite most of it word for word.

Doesn't mean it was my favorite but out of the list, I'd say The Breakfast Club probably defines the 80s the best with Ferris Buellers Day Off a very close 2nd. As someone else mentioned, St. Elmo's Fire is another one right up there.

If I was picking my favorite from the list, it would Aliens or even E.T.
