I agree with PhiLeingFunkie on this one. I love horror movies but this one wasn't any good. It had some potential but the only good, suspensful part of the movie was when the "strangers" are first introduced. A lot of the "scares" were cheap and are due to very loud noises. I attribute its box office success to it's release date. Most people have seens Indy, Iron Man, Narnia, etc.. and there other choice of a new release would be Sex and the City. Not much of an option for many moviegoers, especially the younger ones who flood the theaters on weekends.

I recommend the original French version called "Them" (called "Ils" in French). Much better ending, the characters made much more reasonable decisions, and an overall better movie.

Someone told me that this is essentially a watered down torture porn movie. Essentially like a Skinimax flick for people who aren't ready for the hardcore stuff.

Don't know how true a statement that is, my interest in horror films of this type (random, senseless killilng with no plotline other than the kiling being random and/or senseless) has essentially dissolved.

Someone was wrong, there is no porn, and the torture is very small, if you can even call it that. This movie relies on great tension, the soundtrack and old fashioned scares, like pulling back the curtain and having someone staring at you. It worked for me, but then again I find the Burger King dude a bit creepy. Seems like this is one of those movies that people really like or really don't. Can't please everyone I guess.

I saw it this past weekend. Nothing new here. Another horror film that starts off good, and ends badly. Somebody mentioned Vacancy being better and I agree. Much better than this for sure.

If you want to see a movie where the main characters are stupid as hell watch Wolf Creek. Damn they are just idiots and the killer is a psychic. he knows excactly where they are everytime even when he can't see them. Damn that movie is the most overrated piece of junk

But the Strangers is very good. Don't think the characters are stupid only one time when he goes into the woods and she stays in the house
But otherwise this movie is stellar as hell and damn terrifying and suspenseful at all times

To me this movie was bad from A to Z.
It's so not realistic that it wasn't even scary let me explain how in hidden spoiler text:

[Show spoiler]If the evil family had been ghosts then maybe it would have made some sense but they turned out to be just 3 killers, the daddy the mom and the young daughter. Ok so far but totally non realistic if you consider the way they appear and disappear and just pop up by suprise as if coming out of nowhere, which is not possible in reality (unless you are a ghost) the good couple even had a gun, they could have easily killed the evil family if they had been just a tadbit careful but the evil family was helped by impossible situations and very stupid ones too like the friend showing up and going very slowly and silently around the house till the good couple accidentally shoots him, pff so unrealistic as anyone showing up in such situation would be screaming the names of his friends "hey guys are you there, hello ?" and so on

In fact there is a much MUCH better movie on the same theme that came out a few months ago but whose title I totally can't remember. Its a movie that is in fact a remake from a German movie. If I find the title I'll update this post

yea i agree... i really dont see how all these people loved this movie... cant be horror movie fans.... the beginning of the movie was good, it was creepy and held my attention.... but after a lil while it just dragged on and on... and the ending couldnt have been any more anti-climatic

Well, for all of you that hated this movie so much, it looks like you can avoid the sequel being developed. According to Movieweb Rogue pictures is working on a sequel to begin production in early 2009.

Are you thinking of the French movie "Ils" (aka "Them")?

That one was much better, but the foreign movies are often better than the cheesy American remakes anyway.

Nope I'm thinking of a German movie that was remade by the same Director but in English. Damn I can't quite remember the name. Please help me.
in this movie these two young (maybe around 20 years old) kids looking shy and timid come and borrow eggs at the neighborhood but the story turns out to be a horror movie (nothing sci fi or supernatural here). I remember how the young kid seeming so innocent crashes a golf club on the back of the "good" husband ...

Oh, you're talking about funny games. I saw the one that had Tim Roth and naomi Watts. Pretty twisted movie. That was a remake too? What was the original title?

I just checked imdb.com and the title is the same, "Funny Games". So is the original better than the remake?

Yep that's the one "Funny Games U.S." the full title is !
it's an exact remake of a movie in German by the same director
Anyway my original point being that this movie is way better than The Strangers

Edit: Certainly not Australia, maybe Austria as it's a German speaking country too, can't remember that detail but it comes from that part of Europe for sure
