He also did Mysterious Island, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Psycho and North by Northwest, which were ALL good.

John Williams is awsome when it comes to movie themes. I'd also go with either Ennio Morricone or Jerry Goldsmith.

By far my favorite composer is JERRY GOLDSMITH( Patton, Sand Pebbles, The Omen, Star Trek, The Blue Max,Under Fire etc.). I also love Bernard Herrmann, Alex North, Mikos Rozsa, Elmer Bernstein among a few others.

Of the "newer" composers I like Howard Shore and Newton Howard.

To name a few... Thomas Newman (greatest giant finale writer... ever), Hans Zimmer, Clint Mansell, Craig Armstrong, Steve Jablonsky, Harry Gregson-Williams, James Newton Howard (more for his M. Night Shyamalan scores than anything else), John Powell. I think pretty much all of James Horner's music is the same, but for some reason I still listen to it (I especially enjoy The New World). I used to enjoy pretty much everything Mark Mancina put out, but then he kind of stopped scoring films and yeah... There's also Trevor Rabin, but he'll never top Armageddon and his recent attempts at scoring have not turned out so well.

Hard to choose a favorite. I can say that after watching RAMBO and BASIC INSTINCT 2 that Jerry Goldsmith is really, really missed by me!!!

No one can touch John Williams for putting music to characters (giving them their own identity in music). It's unfortunate that he's in semi-retirement now.

Clint Eastwood has been impressive.

Definatly Hans Zimmer and Harry Gregson-Williams are two of my favorites I love the score on The Rock and Batman Begins

Hans Zimmer Black Hawk Down
Harry Gregson-Williams Crimson Tide

As far as video games Harry Gregson-Williams score on the Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty and onwards is freaking amazing.

I would have to say the top of the list would be
John Williams, but it is really a toss up between John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, and James Horner. All excellent composers, all with their own unique sound and approach to film scores.

I would probably say The Empire Strikes Back was some of John Williams best work, the most definitive musical scores of the Star Wars Saga.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture was some of Jerry Goldsmiths best work. He pioneered some of the newer music recording techniques for that film, especially the electronic elements to the score, and odd array of unusual instruments, such as the Blaster Beam, and the Waterphone

For James Horner, I would say that Aliens was one of the best, especially for an action movie soundtrack.

John Barry. His music, maybe more so than the movies themselves, got me hooked on films. He is, unfortunately, among the last of the breed of composers that understood how to use music in film....less in more and melody still matters. These days composers write music for 1:50 for a 2:00 film. And of course the louder the better. In his later years he's been "difficult" to work with and grew disenchanted with the Hollywood system and basically retired. But his latest efforts are just as good as the early ones.

I also enjoy Jerry Goldsmith who put out an amazing volume of quality work.
