Default No One Beats John Williams!!!

I belive no one comes close to John Williams.Jaws,Raiders,Superman,Close Encounters,Harry Potter, and a little thing called Star Wars. There will never be a composer that equals Mr. Williams film music talents. The closes was Jerry Goldsmith and god bless his soul,he past away a few months ago.I dearlly do miss him.I know of many composers I collect but there's allways something magical about a Williams score. It would be great to have more of his films out on Blu-ray,so his music will sound even better.Time will tell.Movieeddie.

I agree John Williams is a great film score composer. Star Wars ESB IMO is one of the best film scores ever produced.

However, I feel that I must point out his work is often, shall we say, strongly influenced by previous works.

For example, listening to the Star Wars scores, the original trilogy anyway, I can't help but thinking to myself, I've heard this before. It was originally called "The Planets" by Gustav Holst.

The Jaws theme, hmmm...I've heard that in Dvorak.

But in his defense, he's by far not the only composer to "expand" on the works of others.

John Williams. Creates instantly recognisable themes that are known all over the world, Star Wars, Superman, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Raiders, E.T.

His work on Star Wars alone, creating a body of work spanning six films which evolves over the course of the films. Anakin's theme in The Phantom Menace has echoes of Darth Vader's theme, foreshadowing what's to come.

He's amazing.

John Williams is probably the greatest modern composer, but I love to listen to Danny Elfman.

You could have never heard a new track from him and still know it was him. While a lot of his stuff sounds the same, it is just great.

Harry Gregson Williams/Trevor Rabin for their work on the Armageddon Score... SOME VERY emotional stuff.

Hans Zimmer is my favourite.
I also like Harry Gregson Williams.

Harry Gregson Williams composed for 'the Rock' too.

The late and great Jerry Goldsmith followed by John Williams, James Horner (especially his 80's and early 90's stuff), Elfman, Silvestri, the late Basil Poledouris, James Newton Howard, Hans Zimmer...shoot, this is one of my hobby areas, so I can just keep going.

Gotta say, being a film score fan for over 10 years now, I do not have a favorite, but here are some that stand out to me:

Clint Mansell (The Fountain... come on now, one of the best scores in recent history)

John Williams (of course I have to say him because of his iconic themes)

Hans Zimmer (Aside from some of his romantic comedy-ish scores, and even those I don't mind, there's not a single score I don't like)

Harry Gregson-Williams (2 words, Electric Violin. When Trevor Rabin and Harry used it in Armageddon, it was soooo emotional. Too bad Harry pretty much wrote more music than Trevor but Trevor gets the main credit... funny how that works)

Steve Jablonsky (one of my favorite "up-and-coming" composers on the scene right now. His music for Tears of the Sun, Steamboy, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Island are fantastic!)

James Newton Howard (M. Night Shyamalan movies wouldn't be the same without James Newton Howard's almost magical music. I still say he deserved an Oscar for Dinosaur)

Thomas Newman (Crazy orchestrations and amazingly emotional swells and themes, this dude rocks!)

Mark Mancina (I miss his music! Bad Boys, Speed, Money Train, Return To Paradise... He needs to write more music!!! Can't wait for August Rush though)

Geoff Zannelli (He's just now starting his career out but I am lovin it so far!)

That's about it for now...

And I forgot Elfman and Silvestri in my post. Eflman's Edward Scissorhands is sooo great, as is his score to Family Man, though I think I was one of the only ones that really loved that score. And Silvestri... Any sort of adventure film should be scored by him. He is also fantastic at writing simple, yet emotional themes. Especially in movies where you don't expect them really, like Identity.

Jerry Goldsmith: All time favorite.

John Williams

Alan Silvestri

Bruce Broughton (who seems to have retired from movie scores)...Silverado, Young Sherlock Holmes, Tombstone, Harry and the Hendersons, The Rescuers Down Under, Lost In Space...all had terrific scores.

James Horner...sometimes. I feel he reuses his work far too often. This is one reason I feel Hans Zimmer is overrated. One amusing memory I have is that I put on the score for Pearl Harbor and a buddy of mine asked if I was listening to Gladiator. "Nope". I then put on Crimson Tide and he said "OK, NOW that's Gladiator." Wrong again.
