Golf is the most boring sport to watch. He is almost in the hold, 5 yards away. He is trying to sink a birdie. It is so boring. Hockey is my #1 fave sport and #2 is american football. Him saying that sure makes him look like a loser. Who the hell watches golf? Maybe if your tired and want to fall alseep you would put it on but thats it.

an opinion of inuyashalover21 lol

I love Hockey and Golf...... I don't feel a need to compare the two though. I also LOVE baseball, and American Football.... again.. no need to compare.

Well, to each of its own, the point is not to really compare which sport is better. They all have their pros and cons. But really, the point is, being a world-famous golfer, Tiger should be a little bit more professional and sportsman-like to be a good role model for everyone, just not the future prospective golfers.

I mean, I would hate my future kid to grow up watching an idel dissing another just as well-respected and competitive sport.

Just not a very good role model IMO.

Hockey is probably one of the toughest team sports there is, right there with the football and rugby.

Golf.... I must say........ I really find it a hard time to see a real good TV televised game. They always switch to some one I dont want to see and always show the stars such as Tiger. And, given the time I have, the pace is just too slow for me to really see anything.

I'd just watch ESPN news on the highlight, which is kinda what TV broadcast shows anyway, just an extended highlight.

well i dont know if you play ICE hockey, but to jump from road hockey to ice hockey is a leap that you cant jump in a month or two it takes years to accomplish that feat, beleive me, and its true if gretzky came out and said that about golf he would be on the front page.

LOL, I love hockey, but this is probably one of the most foolish comments in this thread. Yes, maybe any fool can pick up a club and whack the ball and maybe make it go into the cup. But to do it well? Get real. Not everyone can do it.

For those who like to say that golf is not a sport, and that it's what "real" sports players play when they're too old to play their "real" sport, how many of those players actually play golf at the higher levels? They play it at a recreational level and can't compete with the pros.

This thread is hilarious in that it sounds like someone challenged hockey's manhood or something and people have to stand up for it.

There is no argument from me that hockey is one of the hardest team sports to play. Not everyone can get on skates, take a stick, and pass/shoot a puck. The ones who do it well are some of the best athletes out there, IMHO.

But seriously, "anybody can play golf"?

The real problem is that Hockey has become a very regional sport. I'm not sure Hockey ever really had a chance in warmer climates. I'm not a huge fan but I loved following Gretzky's career. It's still one of the better live sporting events to attend. I don't think it translates very well to television.

You can certainly do it, but you'd be wrong. At least, when it comes to who watches hockey and golf in the US. For example, the Nielsen ratings for the Masters the past decade:

'07 7.6
'06 6.9
'05 8.0
'04 6.7
'03 6.9
'02 8.1
'01 10.7
'00 7.6
'99 7.9
'98 8.6
'97 11.2

The Stanley Cup FINALS for 2006 and also for 2007 rated:

'07 Game 3 - 0.5
'07 Game 5 - 2.1
'06 Game 3 - 1.7
'06 Game 4 - 2.6
'06 Game 7 - 3.3

Of course, these are apples to oranges comparisons, but the statement that "no one watches golf" is more of a stretch compared to the statement that "no one watches hockey".

you all are a bunch of whiners. He's right about Hockey. I like the Sport of Hockey but at the same I know 2 ppl that actually watch it, the ratings for Hockey are terrible.

So now he says his opinion your upset, you say he needs to grow up, I say you all need to grow up and realize what he says about Hockey, whether you want to hear it or not, is pretty acurate.

my comment about golf was meant like if you were to take the same person and give them 1 monthstime being taught both sports they would be way better at golf then they would at hockey hands down. and like someone said on here who cares, but you have to agree thats pretty ignorant what tiger said about another professional sport, im hoping mike weir or another canuck can plunk him, happy gilmore style in the us open i also want to say i love hockey, golf, football and baseball and have played all the sports mentioned one time or another in my life.

I hate to do this, but since I love hockey, I will defend hockey then.

I agree that NHL is not among the big time sports in the US, not as popular as say the superbowl, the NBA, the world series, but it has its place.

The TV ratings are TERRIBLE stats to compare for Golf and Hockey. Lets see what the rating is for the Canadian TV broadcast only. I am very sure that the Cup final beats out your masters or any of the 4 major easily.

Did you know that NHL had 2 lockouts the last 10 years. The 2006 and 2007 final that you have used to compare are among the HIGHEST TV rating in the recent memory in Canada, why? because the Sens and the Oilers were in it and the Flames (Calgary) was in 05 Final.

I live in Philadelphia, and I used to work in NY and I can honest tell you half of the people have not even heard of the city Calgary or EDMONTON.

Now, lets look at the other opponents, who were the US teams? the Hurricanes?? the Lightnings?? I mean, those are certainly not among the original six teams of the NHL. If you want to use Masters in Golf (one of the most prestigious tourney in golf), shouldnt we use one of the 2 most presitigous teams in the NHL in cup final to see the rating? Maybe, say, The Wings vs the Hawks? (just an example). (I tried to find some rating, but couldnt find it now)

I am not trying to prove that hockey is more popular (well, it is not in the US), but it definitely is for some people and country for that matter.

Anyone can play golf, yes, but can they play it well, thats the point.

anyone can play hockey, they might just suk, thats all.

I guess my point of the thread is sort of to rant about how much tiger sounded like a spoiled rich brat who has no right to diss a sports with hundred years of tradition and millions of fan. After all, NHL has been trying to recover from the terrible operation by gay bettman and it is growing rather rapidly the past 2 years with more than $3 billions of revenue generaged for the NHL alone.

There's no argument that hockey is BIG in Canada. But Tiger isn't Canadian nor does he live in Canada. (Not sure how many tournaments he plays up there.) I think people are taking this a little too seriously. If he says that he doesn't care about rugby and that on one watches it, I suppose the rugby fans will be up in arms.

And I know that it's in jest (or at least I hope it's in jest) but the calls for other PGA players to plunk/hit/check/whatever Tiger sound pretty infantile. Like I said, it almost seems like Tiger insulted hockey's manhoood and that some goon needs to get on the greens and retaliate, just like on the ice.

The bottom line is that in the US, he's right. Very few people really care about hockey south of the border. I'm not one of them, even though I've had to suffer through decades of futility with my favorite team, but the reality is very few people watch hockey here. It would be nice if more did, but oh well.

Millions of people watch, play, grow up with hockey, just as much as many for Golf as well.

Now, I am not going to say Golf is not a sport, because I think it is and I play golf. It is a sport of individual talents, such as Tennis; whereas, hockey is a team sports, much like the basketball. Surely, rules of the games are different, but the fundamentals of team spirit and ideas are the same.

I dont know, I used to enjoy watching news of Tiger reaching new heights, but I am sort of disgusted by this news. Yes, he is probably the best golfer, but so what? That doesnt give him the right to act like a billionaire brat. Be a real sportsman, will ya?!

Tiger Disses Hockey
So he is an ignorant bastard. hmm.

I find this pathetic. First of all, hockey is the best sport in the entire world, and secondly, who the f*ck watches golf?? I mean, sure people watch it but how the hell do people watch it? Golf is the most boring "sports" to watch, besides Baseball. Nascar is worse, but I won't bash Nascar in this thread.

Hockey isn't as big in the USA as Hockey is in Canada because people in the USA first of all have generally better weather (thus they play outdoor sports like baseball, golf, etc.), which influences a lot and the coverage is much more minimal.

Hockey > Every other sport.

Calgary was in the Cup final in 2004, the lockout was 2005... Plus, Calgary played against the Lightning in that final in 2004. Neither team was an Original-6, but it was a damned exciting final.

I'm sure the comment that poster made about Weir plunking Tiger was in jest as well.

The debate & discussion here about Tiger making the comments he did are not about the potential truth of the comment itself. This discussion concerns whether Tiger was being a professional (i.e. role model, or ambassador for the sportsmanship of golf) in his commenting on hockey.

Wayne Gretzky was classy in his comments about golf. Tiger Woods was completely without class in disrespecting another professional sport. To say he doesn't watch hockey is one thing. To say "Who watches hockey anymore?" is completely different.

Tiger wanted to be the best his sport has ever seen. He's achieved that. But, with that title comes the responsibility of being a representative of all things related to that sport. This includes sportsmanship... this comment shows he doesn't have much of it.

Just my opinion.

Professional athletes should stick to what they do best, play sports, and not commenting about other sports/politics/ and basic stuff that they know nothing about and which no one cares what they think.

I would second this post. Tiger IS THE BEST in Golf, probably in the history of the game. He's achieved what 99.999% of all past golfers cannot achieve in their lifetime before he was 30. Only a select few could even be on the same par/sentence to compare Tiger and other greats.

Then again, that does come responsibility and he is the face of golf. His acting childishly would almost symbolize golf is acting childishly. I mean, come on..?

Sure, Hockey is not big in the south of border, but how does that equal to "no one watches/cares hockey"?

PS. oops, yea, flames in 04. I was typing too quickly. :P

anyhow, I wouldnt say hockey is the best sport, as I believe to each of its own. But hockey is definitely not a dead sport that no one watches. It is a good sport, just run by bad executives...
