See...game consoles need to become more and more powerful to provided more and more immersive environments. Gaming has been pushing tech forward since the beginning (the Wii being the only exception AFAIK). The SAME tech can allow for you to do many other things besides gaming.

Sony and Microsoft have figured out that gaming is not people's ENTIRE lives. They are trying to cover those bases as well (just like Microsoft). Welcome to the battle for your living room!

I, for one, am enjoying these benefits. I have never gotten this much use out of my console before. And, it has uncluttered my equipment rack (it replaces 3 products that would be there otherwise).

I think Microsoft may force Sony out early by rushing their console out...again. MS likes that head start. Then, they can use fuzzy logic like...we have sold more units so far...like they didn't have a head start.

Of course, this time around, all the Cell programming skills will transfer over to the PS4. Developers will have to learn how to program for MS next offering. In other words, ease of development will be with Sony next time around. The only thing that will need to be learned is how to take advantage of the new GPU.

+1

Well stated.

I'm expecting to pick up my new PS4 in November 2010, personally.

The PS4 cell sounds like a beast! However I hope Sony doesn't bottleneck the system by skimping on the system RAM. Also, I wonder if the PS4 will do what Sony had originally intended the PS3 to do, which is for the cell to handle ALL of the processing. AI, graphics, etc. In other words, I wonder if the PS4 will even have a graphics card included.

While we're on the subject, what exactly would everyone like to see go into the PS4? For myself, I want to see Sony come up with some sort of new innovative way that we interact with our games. Not just the status quo of better graphics. For example, the PS Eye and Wii demonstrations on You Tube where they were able to project 3d images from the tv would be something worth looking into.

Sony and Nvidia have already come to agreement that NV will be making the graphics card for PS4.

You pretty much have to use a standard graphics card these days (unless you are Nintendo and do not really care about graphics) as using industry standard cards makes programmer much easier and developers.

Sony has not stated that this cell will be the processor for PS4, it is just that everyone is adding up the timing and it looks possible.

Every Playstation has used a different processor architecture, different optical drive (Cd - DVD - Blu-Ray), and different graphics architecture. I think it may be a little to early to assume that all these will not change for the PS4, and we will just get beefed up versions of what we are using now.

It is a long way away, I would be surprised to see any hint of the PS4 before 2011, actually you will probably see the PS4 design (not out on the market just E3 behind the glass kinda stuff), about one year after they release the next X-Box.. which may be more close than some think...

This may sound silly, but I'd like to see it build so that everything feeds into it, and then it feeds into the TV/Receiver (with whatever replaces HDMI ) - so that the XMB can be overlayed on top of anything you might be watching on satelite or cable TV.

Wouldn't it rock to be able to be watching TV and then have a PSN message or chat request pop up? That would start to take the "more than a game console" thing to the next level.

Id expect the next Xbox at the end of 2010, based upon the launch in 2005. Nintendo, who knows. They may want to hold back a new console depending on how well the Wii keeps selling. When Sony says a 10 year "life cycle" they mean they plan on supporting the console for 10 years, not that they wont come out with a new system in that time period. Honestly, if they went by 10 year cycles, the ps2 would have just come out 3 years ago.
yuppers...
the support cycle of ANY PLAYSTATION SYSTEM is on a 10 year support. and that does not mean a new system in that time frame sony would not release a new system but the old system will still be supported. since the playstation 3 was released in 2006...2016 is the support cycle.

I could definitely see this occuring, if you look how far ahead the PS3 is as opposed to the 2 they are like night and day, I really think we're in for a treat with the next gen processors... Computing technologies are getting smaller and smaller... IBM is already developing chips that contain tiny water pipes to water cool the processors, it's so amazing how far ahead they are, and continue to go in their chip making processes. I know for a fact that IBM is already developing chips on 33nm wafers as well. (I worked at one of the plants where they developed the Cell) IBM is so far ahead of the game amazing. I can only imagine computer gaming consoles like the PS3/4, and other systems will only become more advanced as they progress, potentially ceasing the need for a Personal computer for some I believe. I also think that the PS3 is only 2 years old and the capabilities of its technology have yet to be fully tapped. Also, getting onto when the PS4 may be dropped, is us possibly getting ahead of ourselves, as the cost of fuel rises, ultimately the cost of everything else rises, thus causing the cost of Chip production to rise as well, now granted, as time progresses I'm sure Sony/IBM and other companies will find ways to drastically cut down on chip manufacturing costs, which at this point in time are killing Sony's bottom line. So I think only time will tell what the next generation console has to bring. But whatever comes out I'm sure Sony will spare no expense in keeping its loyal customers very happy, and prove to all of us why they are definitely one of the greatest computer electronics makers out there. Plus, putting M$ to shame once again with developing a far more advanced machine.

The initial Cell investment was for more than one generation. I'd be willing to bet the farm on that. It was about building a platform/ecosystem for the future both in terms of hardware and maybe even more importantly the development tools. There may be tweaks necessary for the next Cell development tools.. but just from a tooling perspective it would be suicide to start from ground zero again. Suicide in this market. Which is why I don't think you will see a different processor.

I think much will depend on how Sony feels the year lead of the 360 impacted them. I imagine Sony made sure no one else could use the Cell in a gaming console .. otherwise it would make a lot of sense for MS to use the Cell.

True. I don't know about the part about keeping the Cell out of other game consoles, but MS wouldn't do it out of pride anyway (like a BD drive add-on).

no, the purpose of a console over a PC is theres one standard for each console, theres thousands of diferent XP PC's yet only one PS2 (well 2, but they only made stuff smaller in the slim)

If Sony releases a new console in 2010, I'm done with the playstation brand forever. I didn't spend 600$ on a system in order to get <4 years out of it, of which 1 entire year was entirely pathetic.

It seem you don't get it and you didn't read the other posts. Console support is for 8 to 10 years, but that doesn't stop future models from being released before that time. Also, try to remember the Playstation brand has the LONGEST console support...period. It would be quite silly to drop the Playstation brand, because you don't want others to purchase a more advanced model if they want to.

The BD was for different issues and wouldn't have provided them with leverage. However basing it on the Cell would potentially make the development tools a pivotal choke point for the game industry...via software.

Considering I'm one of the people who made one of the other posts you might want to recheck your thinking on what I do or do not know.

Interesting point. I think we would have heard rumors about talks on this matter (like the BD drive talks), if this had any merit so far. I guess we should keep our eyes and ears open for rumors or the lack there of.

Here's my problem with a 2010 release for a new console.

The PS2 has had far more support than the PS3 has thus far, even in the PS3's lifecycle.

If the PS4 did come out in 2010, even if they continued to support it, that would mean that the PS3 was the primary focus of Sony for less time than any other console, ever. Why did I spend more money on the PS3 than any other console to have the least support of any other console?

Frankly, you won't have an answer for this question I care about.

It's more based on MS way of working than anything I know. It makes perfect sense because it potentially brings even Sony under their yoke. Something that can't happen with separate platforms or is alot more expensive via other paths..especially given their $10 million hardware "shortcut" cost them over a billion.

I'm not saying Sony will come under their yoke but really that's the only model that MS has been able to make money - as a monopoly.

I think Ill wait until Sony announces the ps4. But considering the amount of stuff the ps3 can do, most of which hasn't nearly been used to its full potential, I speculate that it will last longer than the ps2. I don't think well see the ps4 for a while. Until I see it announced by Sony, Ill continue to enjoy my ps3.
