For those with receivers that do accept multi-channel LPCM (mine accepts up to 7.1 LPCM ... some receivers may accept only 5.1 LPCM for all I know), it seems like the PS3 doesn't let you output MP3s in stereo and so the receiver is duped into thinking it's already a surround source.

Optical cables are fairly cheap I reckon ..

I am not sure about all the technical specs. Have an Onkyo 605 and it took us a while to figure out how to get it to come out of all 7 speakers. Only played in the 2 fronts until we unchecked all the boxes on the ps3

I plan on going through HDMI for my video and audio and that would suck if my music can only be played in stereo.

I hope this isn't true and there is a way around this one.
Dude i have the 805 and this works sweet now. Just set it to All channel stereo and bam your good to go.

OP , Sorry we couldn't sort you out though

I know I've said this many times but jic. I already have it outputting in on all my speakers (I just use 5)

When I:

1. Play a Dolby Surround (stereo) DVD on my PS3 it outputs in 5 channels through my receiver

2. Play a surround DVD on my PS3 it outputs in 5 channels through my receiver

3 Play a BD on my PS3 it outputs in 5 channels through my receiver

The PS3 is working just fine for absolutely everything except for MP3s and WMVs, divx, wma. aac etc. (And when I play the exact same MP3s on my PC the receiver expands it to surround -- so it's not the receiver)

And I can't uncheck all the boxes. I mentioned a bunch of boxes that are "greyed out" -- they are already checked and pressing X to uncheck them doesn't do anything. They stay checked no matter what. I wish I could take a screenshot to show you.

When I use optical, it works just fine.

Zor this might be a silly question, but, your are choosing manual (not automatic) when you go to the audio settings, yeah?

Maybe that's why yours works. I don't have "all channel stereo" I have lots of other similar options (Dolby Pro Logic II, Neo 6 Music, Neural THZ but not the same thing you have ... O well, I'm still happy with my Sony receiver ... got it for just over 300)

Yes, I select manual and some options are greyed out -- already checked-in-boxes -- and I can't uncheck these boxes. Other options are normal and I can check and uncheck as I please.

PS TY everyone for all your efforts

hmm really strange, but i'm sure it can do it! The manual on P57 says

"The enhanced surround mode allows you to
listen to higher fidelity sound and select the
decoding mode for listening to a 2 channel
stereo sound as multi channel sound. "

It must be able to do it!

The thing with the Onkyo is i was going through all the modes, THX cinema, Neo 6, Pro Logic II etc etc and NONE of them did it. The only one whcih would is All channel stereo.

I think there is a mode that will do it, just have to find the right one.

Is it on E.SUR mode?

Yep, it's on E.SUR mode and I've gone through all the different ones including the extra Sony sound fields for music and movies and portable music and what not and none of them work.

So for you too, the only 1 that works is this "all channel stereo" I guess there's no chance Sony will update the receiver's firmware to include, huh? I would have gone with an Onkyo or Yamaha receiver but I was afraid of the DTS "bomb"/"pop" bug and I also heard that Onkyos get inordinately hot. I also figured that if I stuck with Sony components I wouldn't have any HDMI HDCP hiccups (my Westinghouse tv caused some probs for some folks with the PS3 ... some say it was fixed with firmware updates on one side or the other .. mine came with the newest firmware but I didn't want to take any chances)

I want to thank you and everyone else again. I am so happy you tried to be so helpful. If my receiver ends up breaking for some reason, next time I'll be sure to make sure it has an "all channel stereo" option

P.S. It does do it for other 2 channel stuff (like on my PC or 2 channel TV DVDs or TV) ... o well. TY again

Im not giving up! This has been bugging me for months so if can find a solution so can you

This is interesting;

Types of enhanced surround mode
Enhanced surround
mode
[Display]

Multi channel
audio after
decoding
Effect

Pro Logic II*
[PLII]
5 channel Performs Dolby Pro Logic II decoding.

Pro Logic IIx*
[PLIIx]
7 channel Performs Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoding.

Neo:6 Cinema
[NEO6 CIN]
7 channel Performs DTS Neo:6 Cinema mode decoding.

Neo:6 Music
[NEO6 MUS]
7 channel Performs DTS Neo:6 Music mode decoding. This setting is
ideal for normal stereo sources such as CDs.

Neural-THX
[NEURAL-THX]
7 channel Next generation of Neural-THX® Surround. In addition to
stereo enhancement processing and pure discrete 5.1
surround sound, now capable of full 360° 7.1 surround sound
playback from Neural-THX® surround encoded content.

To me (and i could be wrong) that says that all modes are 7 channels apart from Pro Logic II*

But then it says this at the bottom

*Depends on the speaker pattern setting, some enhanced surround mode may not be available.

What is speaker pattern setting? I dug a little deeper!

After you have install and connect your speaker, be sure to select the speaker pattern from
SPEAKER menu (page 44).
Select the speaker pattern according to your speaker setting. For details of each parameter, see the
table as follows.

Does your amp think you have 7.1? Maybe if you tell it that you only have 5.1 it would work.....

I have mine set to 5.0 (i.e. 3/2). I doubt the missing subwoofer is the problem.

hmmm no it shouldn't (but you never know)

Just played around with my PS3 audio settings, try this,

Go to Sound>output>HDMI and then when you get to the choices, some will become grayed out, but you should be able to uncheck the high frequencies 192Khz, 176.4Khz etc. Once these become unchecked the next frequency down will be available to be unchecked and so on.

Uncheck all those 7.1s! I think this could be the winner

Set your PS3 to bitstream, then let your receiver take the stereo and re-disburse it 5.1 - 6.1 etc dependant on your receiver.

I usually set my receiver to Neo-6 6.1.. but it will only work if the PS3 is set to bitstream not linear.

You are GOD! That worked! (I had to uncheck all the 5.1s too. I feel so stupid now. I hadn't thought of working my way down unchecking those; i just assumed greyed out meant it stayed that way)

So now I just need to uncheck a bunch when playing MP3s and then when playing a DVD or BD I just choose automatic and it's all set. Not too much hassle. What is a little bit of a hassle is that the receiver won't play any audio when the TV isn't displaying the HDMI source from the PS3 (so for example if my TV is displaying from another source the audio stops ... this happened with my old BD player too except for it it didn't stop entirely, just stopped and started over and over again ... some HDCP issue I guess).

I also wish the PS3 could upsample the MP3s from 48khz to 96khz. My PC does that but the PS3 doesn't. PS3 still sounds better though ... I don't know why. Maybe it's the HDMI or just the internal audio decoding. (PC is hooked up via optical)

THANK YOU so much! You are GOD!

@E72

I had already tried setting BD/DVD HDMI audio output to bitstream and also BD optical audio output to bitstream (and every other combo) and it had no effect. I'm guessing these two settings just affect BDs and DVDs ... is there some other bitstream setting I missed?

Thanks to everyone again, especially to the Almighty Aygie!
