That really depends on the size and quality of the TV. Projectors can come in cheaper if you go much past 50" in a decent quality TV and you get more than double the diagonal. Quality for the buck, even with bulb replacements every 3000+ hours, which is a long time even under reasonably heavy use, I think projectors are the way to go. Especially if you're considering wall mounting a TV.. that just screams projection to me.

Gotta agree with you there.. the white wall is more of a temporary measure but so long as it is white and relatively blemish free, the main drawback is more a result of it not doing well with ambient light.

I was projecting onto a beige wall for months and it still looked pretty good. You have all the detail and such, just with a beige wash over the dimmer colours and the room had to be fairly dark. Getting a white screen allowed a little more ambient light (albeit not much - it's a cheapy until I find something I like) and removed the beige wash. Skys became clear blue instead of overcast.. buildings looked new instead of weathered. It's little different than buying a TV with gimpy settings though - different colour temperatures and whatnot - and not calibrating it. A white wall at least wouldn't alter the colours.

Anyway, just something to consider.. projection is definitely the next step beyond TV.

No doubt. Some of the biggest bang for the buck systems. Great advice all around, regarding speakers, to compliment his new Sammy.

How many decades has it been since Rotel made a speaker???? if they're still making speakers, it's news to me.

Bang and Olufsen, although asthetically pleasing, are generally held in the same regard as Bose.... as being over-priced (although much much higher quality)

With a receiver, and you will have an excellent bang-for-your buck system.

The Cinema 90 5.1 system (including sub) is around $900, they are all wall mountable but the center, and all come in black or white.

Also Paradigm dealers are not too hard to find, and many have a Cinema system on display.
I found a Paradigm dealer a few miles from my house, so I'm going today to check it out. Hopefully they have a system set up because I'm really leaning toward this system. I've read alot of good things about Paradigm and want to actually "hear" the difference.... Thanks

I just had to "quote and comment" on your post, because of the Totem Acoustic inclusion. It is rare indeed on this forum when this excellent Canadian speaker manufacturer is mentioned.

I auditioned at least a dozen or so speaker setups before making my choice. It took me well over a year to make my decision on the Totems and I've been more than happy with them.

Watch out for the harmony remote if you are doing the PS3 for bluray it will not work unless you buy the NYKO IR receiver. but im not sure if it will work through walls! I love the ps3, but the bluetooth remote is by far the biggest drawback.

I like yamaha receivers for a smaller budget. a lot of bang for your buck, plus they are usually easy to set up and operate. I find the onkyos were a bit more complex especially since you are just getting started. Klilpsch speakers are also good.

If you are not adverse to the concept, check out the open box deals you could do great... I got my Martin Logan front speakers for $600 for the pair that way!

I would avoid the accoustimass system however.

hope that helps!

Please stay away from the Bose. I've owned a lifestyle system for several years and am soooo glad that I got rid of it. It basically does nothing well and there is so much better sound for the money available. It is just overpriced for what it delivers.

Try to find a Best Buy in your area that has a Magnolia Home Theater store in it. They will showcase some nice Definitive and Klipsch speakers and will also have some nice Denon and Yamaha AV receivers. And you will notice that inside their sound room Bose product is curiously absent. Also, check out www.tweeter.com. If you have a Tweeter store in your area you should scope out the clearance section. I absolutely committed grand larceny on the deal I got on some Polk Audio RM 50T's and RM 30's. Tweeter is a big time Polk dealer as well as Martin Logan. Good luck and keep us up to date on how the project develops.

I'm def not going for the Bose anymore, don't worry. Plus I dont believe they would even be compatible with my setup. For the Acoustimass system don't you have to wire each satellite to the "base module"? And I dont believe there is an output from the module to hook up to a receiver b/c it does all the calibration itself..... way to go. Correct me if I'm wrong though, this is just from what I've read and understand.

Every review I have seen of Bang and Olufsen's Beolab 5 speakers indicates they are among the best in the world.

I'd say the vast majority of the audiophile community would disagree with whatever reviews those are then.......

who reviewed them, a magazine that has their paid ads in it? People who own them and want to justify the cost?

They're not bad.... just way over-priced.

The vast majority of the audiophile community is misguided. I'd still associate the general name of Bang & Olufsen with being overpriced, but I wouldn't dismiss the BeoLab 5 system out of hand.

Sorry to disappoint you but you would be wrong. Just do a search for Beolab 5 and reviews. I found too many to list. The first one I read was from Sound and Vision Magazine. When the 5s were introduced numerous audiophile magazines reviewed them. I have read numerous reviews and all praise them highly. If you have a review that does not praise them I would be interested to read it, to hear both sides of the story

I follow high end audio quite closely, and I've never heard of those particular speakers. I am, however, familiar with B & O's stuff. B & O seems to have the same MO as Bose: sell overly priced crap to those who buy into their marketing message without actually listening critically.

Maybe the Beolab 5 is the sole exception to this rule of thumb, but I doubt it.

You have never heard of the speakers yet you are familiar with B and O? Anybody who is at all familiar with B and O is aware of the speakers, they have been around for almost 5 years. Have you heard of or heard Beolab 3s or 9s? Listen before you judge, particularly something you have never even heard of. The Beolab 5s include automatic room calibration with an automated microphone that extends from each speaker.
B and O also, as far as I know, sells the only plasma with an integrated motorized camera that measures the color of the screen every 100 hours of use and then recalibrates to maintain an identical picture as the panel ages.

I have listened to various B&O offerings, and find them over-priced...... and think the "Everywhere Sound" gimmick they try to pull off makes them sound muddy...... that said, I formulate my own opinions from listening to them, and really don't care about reviews.... If I were swayed by reviews, I'd own BOSE.

If you like B&O, and obviously you do..... that's great. Do you own their speakers/t.v. ?? if so, which ones? I always thought their stuff looked great (asthetically speaking)

I can't say I've seen any of their new offerings for televisions.

I thought that I would add to this discussion by posting a few more links to reviews on these speakers. I've never heard these speakers, but I think way too many highly respected reviewers have praised these for them not to be up to par. I'm not suggesting that there are no better alternatives out there at this price point, but in that price range I highly doubt anything would be trash. Not even BOSE could peddle their snake oil at that price without coming up with something being close to phenomenal. I might also add that I drive a VW Passat which has a B&O system and it's one of the better car systems I've heard. I imagine that the systems in Audi's are even better. I'm sure there's better sound out there than these, but I'm also sure that these are much better than anything I can afford. I don't know if any pair of speakers are worth $16,000 to me anyway. Just my two cents, and here are the links: http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/hom...5-speaker.html http://www.ultraaudio.com/equipment/...n_beolab_5.htm http://www.audioholics.com/news/on-l...nd-more-page-3

I'm sorry but if I had $16K for a PAIR of speakers, I think I would put them towards some B&W 8 Series speakers.
