Exclamation Just A Minute Please. . .Not So Fast . . .

Anyone hoping for a faster load up time will be disappointed in the new Pioneer 05 and 51 Blu-Ray player. They are not all that faster than previous models. Only the new very, very expensive Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD, will have what appears to be something of an instantaneous start-up time. Estimated boot-up time for the BDP-09FD is about half of what it now is at about one full minute for most players already on the market. This issue of the long start-up time should be something to get used to, when you consider how long it takes an average computer to boot up. And, with so much compressed, micro circuitry involved, it’s no wonder it takes so long!

Consumer Convenience
Due to the exclusive chip set design and build quality Pioneer is now utilizing, significant strides in speed performance have been made with the new players to now rival the rapid playback rate consumers have come to experience when using their DVD players. This platform greatly improves disc load, power on, power off and disc eject times.

I pre-ordered the 51FD this weekend at BB, taking advantage of the the rewardzone 12% discount coupon. The Magnolia store did not show any info on the 05FD, but their warehouse had 24 of the 51FD in stock. So I jumped for the 51FD. Will proably get a 09FD when they are released this fall, unless the 05FD is heavily discounted for the holiday season.

The player is supposed to be ready for pick-up tomorrow. Can't wait!! Just have to make sure it has the latest firmware upgrade and not the "demo" firmware.

Exclamation Warning!

OK. . .Here’s MY situation. Last night, I hooked up a BDP-05 FD to my Pioneer Receiver. Everything seemed to work fine on the HDMI side. I found the Bitstream most impressive, especially the DTS HD MA side. While, I wasn’t all that impressed with Dolby TrueHD, the assumed improvements on the Dolby side were rather slender or simply minor to my ear. But, perhaps there were simply too many issues I had with the player that are forcing me to take it back to Best Buy and wait to see what Sony can offer with the S5000ES.

Perhaps somebody could explain to me why is it that some of my DTS HD MA 7.1 discs, didn’t show up on the LED screen of the receiver, signifying that the SB or Surround Back Speakers were activated? Well, although I did hear a lot of sound coming from the SB speakers, I just don’t understand why on the film “Shoot em Up,” the SB channels showed up on the LED screen, when the opening DTS logo appeared, only to see the SB channels suddenly disappear on the LED screen, when the movie began! This situation has also happened with other 6.1 and 7.1 discs, while most of the discs (especially regular DVD’s) in my collection clearly show either EX or ES on the LED screen. . .Why? The funny thing about this DTS HD MA situation is that I have a special DTS 7.1 demonstration disc from the CES show of last year, and this disc shows up fine on the receiver’s LED read out, clearing showing that the SB surrounds are activated throughout the entire playback. Have I missed something here? Are some discs simply not going to show up in 7.1 on the receiver’s LED screen?

Anyway, the next problem I had was that I noticed the LPCM side was rather flat, through the HDMI. Even though the 05 comes with a level control feature to balance out the speaker outputs, I didn’t do the speaker level test from the player, since I had already done the levels with a sound meter at the receiver. Well, while I wouldn’t exactly say the LPCM wasn’t good, I think there is something to be said for “full channel management” that you fully get with the bitstream as opposed to a straight or direct sort of signal using the Blu-Ray’s internal decoder. I was hoping for better results with some of the features the 05 now has to offer. Perhaps the biggest of all surprises was that the load of time was no better than all previous Pioneer Blu-ray players I have sampled!!

The main reason for bringing up the issue of the LPCM side is because I then hooked up the 05 to an older Pioneer Elite receiver that had 7.1 analog inputs. Well, the results here weren’t really good, in fact, I found no improvement over my previous older model BDP-94FD Elite player!! This time, I tried to use the internal speaker level control in the 05, only to discover that connected to the old receiver, the SB channels and the subwoofer weren’t activated or there was no pink-noise to level off the signal!! I tried everything to get something of a signal from those channels to no avail. So, I just gave up and I found that sound did come from the subwoofer and SB channels once a Blu-ray disc was played!! Talked about confusing! Of course, the results simply weren’t as good or just plain disappointing when compared to HDMI. I wanted to think that the 05 and any of the other newer players could give good results on the analog side. Did I miss something here? At any rate of thinking, I tend to believe that no player, with any sort of internal decoding can offer the more fuller, impressive results that occur on the HDMI side.

Last I heard the new Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD does have some sort of management on all 7.1 channels from the player! My question about this player would be about the analog side and would this mean an overall improvement? But then, everybody will have to consider the high price tag that the 09 comes with at a whopping 2200 dollars!!! Please. . .Any suggestions or answers would be most appreciated!

This simply can't be a true statement. I have the BDP-95FD and have demo-ed
the 05 at the store and the loads times are at least ten times faster than my player.

I didn't pull out a stopwatch but compared to my 95, the power up and load times of the 5 or 6 titles I checked were faster. I did upgrade the firmware to 1.02 the moment I put the player in the rack.

Slow load times are nice. It gives me time to craft a very good drink and for my tubes to properly warm.

I have used a stopwatch. With tray empty, from power-off to tray open is 23seconds. With tray loaded, from power-off to tray open is 37 seconds. This is much faster than my BDP-94HD.

Sounds about right. Damn you for having a 94HD. I bought the Sony BDP-S1, then the Pioneer HD1, then went to the 95FD. I assume you got the Superman Returns with the PCM? All I got was a 2nd copy of the Dave Mathews and Tim Reynolds, Radio City Music Hall concert which I promptly gave to the local salesman for future considerations and favors.

Correct and I sold Superman Returns to another member at a good price for both of us. Now I can buy it again, plus another title.

Default Not Much of A Difference For Me. . .

I had both players connected and because the remote of either player will work or activate, this is how I did my test on the start-up time and loading. If there was a difference, it wasn't at all impressive for me to say there has been an overall improvement. Therefore, I can only go with my own personal experience. The timing was about 30 seconds between players! This isn't something to rave about or feel so confident. Also, the player rejected discs that it had already played! I have to feel that perhaps there is something of a firmware update needed, but a Pioneer rep told me that an update wasn't needed. At any rate, as much as I like Pioneer products, I find this whole Blu-Ray situation with them confusing, especially with a Pioneer player coming on the market every six months.

Blu-RayLover...

I suggest that you read your owner's manual. In particular, if you are having issues with the sound, look at the feature called Audio DRC and make sure that it is not enabled.

Also remeber, if you are connecting the player to your receiver via HDMI, the speaker adjust settings will be disabled on your player.

Finally, make sure that you install firmware version 1.02, available since last Friday.

Good luck.

Superman Returns did come with the 94, however so few did so it was ridiculous. I was at my Magnolia store the day these players were delivered and was the 1st to walk out of the store with one. They checked every player received and not one had the disc. The local Pio rep and I are friends and he looked into it for me, and apparently if the box did not have a sticker on it stating it had SR you were out of luck. damn....I since have upgraded to the 95.
