SAN FRANCISCO -- Netflix Inc. said Thursday that major technical problems over the past three days have severely limited the number of DVDs it could send out.

The unspecified problems affected all of the Los Gatos-based company's 55 shipping centers and marked the biggest disruption in service since Netflix launched its DVD-by-mail subscription business nine years ago.

Well, my shipping Wednesday titles did not arrive. They almost always do overnight. I'm pretty irritated. Wife is out of town this weekend, and I was going to stay up late watching double features Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They have three of my movies hostage.

Didn't seem to bother investors today, though.

Strange I got 4 blu-rays today but didn't get one that was supposed to ship on Tuesday. Sucks because because its the first Pirates of the Caribbean and I received the other two.

Got one yesterday but with the Olympics on, movie watching has been on hold. Still use instant access every day at work though, so I'm still getting my moneys worth.

Yep, I got the notice as well. I'm slightly bummed since I'm on vacation this week and was looking forward to some extra movie time. I had a documentary coming called "The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Flick," but I guess I will have to wait! At least Netflix is doing the right thing by issuing customer credit.

I don't mean to rub it into everyones faces but I'm just glad I chose Blockbuster Total Access over Netfix....Oh I meant Netflix.

What's weird is that I got my DVDs in the mail today despite what the message said. They didn't do me any good as I'm stuck out of town and can't watch them anyway.

And today I received my 4th!!! copy of Sleuth on BD, once AGAIN cracked!
WTF!?!?! I don't even know if i should call them asking yet again for another replacement. I feel like just downloading it somewhere off the internet

They admitted having trouble especially sending out Blu-rays lately and are working on it. One thing they might try is put a "sticker" onto the "disc itself" !?

How about using carton sleeves for BDs! I would not even mind paying an extra $2 a month for a few cents higher shipping cost per title.

I was already going to cancel this month due to excessive throttling; it'll be the second time I've canceled with them. I will of course sign-up again because, despite their problems, they're still the best online rental service out there.

Canceling has its advantages, I get to try out the competition to reinforce my previous claim. I'll be using a site called "greencine.com" this time.

Engineers for online DVD rental pioneer Netflix Aug. 14 frantically continued to try to determine the cause of a technical glitch that had disrupted daily disc shipments to more than 30% of its 8.4 million subscribers.

The problem — discovered internally — resulted in Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix not shipping DVDs from any of its 55 nationwide distribution centers Aug. 12, shipping only partial orders Aug. 13 and none Aug. 14.

The disruption did not affect DVD returns or Netflix’s Web site, including the Instant Watch streaming service, according to spokesperson Steve Swasey. He didn’t know if the problem had originated at corporate headquarters or at a distribution center.

“This is absolutely top priority for the company to get fixed,” Swasey said. “We don’t want to go without shipping to our members. It is what we live for.”

Netflix experienced a 24-hour shutdown of its Web site in March — the first technical malfunction in the company’s 10-year history, which resulted in the service issuing 5% discounts to subscribers’ monthly bills.

Looks like they do issue credit so you should be fine

Meanwhile, Moody’s Investors Service Aug. 14 downgraded competitor Blockbuster Inc. due to concerns over the DVD rental giant’s future. The service cited “notable” improvements in Blockbuster’s operating income but remained critical regarding the Dallas-based service’s ability to refinance in “a challenging credit environment.”

Michael Pachter, analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities in Los Angeles, countered that investor confidence in Blockbuster would return when skepticism about the company’s aborted proposal to acquire Circuit City Stores abated.

Received my disc yesterday which shipped Wednesday. Not everyone was affected. I don't like BBV.

Same thing with me having one shipped Wednesday and getting it Thursday. Obviously not all are affected and I suppose they were just covering their bases just in case.

Anyone else seriously considering switching to BBV? Not that I need more movies to watch, but the movie got returned on Tuesday, then they throttled me until Wednesday, and now I won't see anything until next week (most likely) because their system is FUBAR.

I have always been happy with their service, but it seems absolutely retarded (don't protest me ) to pay for something that is broken when there are other options.

What do you guys think? BBV just as good?

I always cancel my membership before my next billing cycle. Netflix has yet to throttle my account.
