There are only 3 movies that I can remember to have litterally laughed out loud at:

Spaceballs
Dodgeball
Old School

I've watched other movies that are comedies that I liked and thought were good movies and sometimes funny, just no other movies have gotten me laughing out loud.

The Exorcist Prequel had me ON THE FLOOR!!!

I don't know what the heck it was and people were kinda gringing around me, but when that kid got ripped apart by Jackels....I dunno...comedy central right there.

That movie was full of inappropriately funny little gems!!!

oOo. I'm a master debater, so this should be fun.

First off, what are you laughing at in Total Recall? I don't recall that movie being funny (at least not intentionally)

Generally for me, it's not even so much the lines in a movie that are funny. I don't often find myself laughing at the actual jokes per se, more in the way a character acts or delivers their lines.

Eugene Levy is a great example. It's rarely what he's saying that's funny, but all how he says it and his facial expressions. Steve Carell is also so great at being funny just when acting normal.

I personally find Will Ferrel funny most of the time too. Only when he's a little more toned down though.

There haven't been a ton of great comedies lately. I really loved Knocked Up though. Liked Be Kind Rewind as well (not the serious parts). 40 yr old virgin was also a lot of fun and definitely made me laugh.

I hated things like Borat, Jackass (that's supposed to be funny right?), and really any movie where people are just too over the top in trying to be funnier. Haven't big a big fan of Sandler films lately either, but I did really like Rob Schneiders part in 'Chuck and Larry'

Oh and if you want a good laugh - check out Jackie Chan's Gorgeous. Don't think I've laughed that much in a long time.

I am surprised no one has offered up the Naked Gun movies. I know they are over the top type of comedies, but they are real funny.

Here are some other favs of mine:
1. Austin Powers - I know it has been played out by now, but when you first saw it - admit you laughed.
2. Napoleon Dynamite - you have to watch this movie at least three to four times to soak it all in
3. Blazing Saddles
4. The Jerk
5. The Vacation Movies
6. Animal House
7. Raising Arizona
8. Little Miss Sunshine
etc.

This topic pops up all the time, but I am 100% right when I say that the funniest American movie ever was My Cousin Vinnie.

But if you like movies where the good story is the main feature, and the comedy is incidental (as described by the OP) then The Boys and Girl from County Clare (Irish film) is fantastic.

I love comedies with an absurd, abstract or dark sense of humor. Some of my favorites are Monty Python & The Holy Grail, Inside Llewyn Davis, The Voices, Clerks, Shaun of the Dead, A Fantastic Fear of Everything, In Bruges, The Big Lebowski, Filth and A Serbian Film.

Comedy is very hit or miss for me. Looking back at all the 2015 films I watched, not that many were comedies. Hell, Bone Tomahawk was the movie I found most funny/humorous all year. And that's a horror-western.

2015 Comedies I liked:
  • Bone Tomahawk
  • Mistress America
  • Cooties
  • The Overnight
  • He Never Died
  • Deathgasm
  • Bloodsucking Bastards
  • What We Do In The Shadows
  • The Voices

2015 Comedies I didn't like:
  • Trainwreck
  • Me & Earl & The Dying Girl
  • Sisters
  • Buzzard

And most of these movies aren't straight up comedies. A lot of them are other genres, with some humor or laughable moments within. I tend to avoid straight forward comedies all together. I just have no interest.

One good comedy I've seen from this year is Band of Robbers, which is an indie/low budget comedy about a retelling of Huck Finn & Tom Sawyer set in modern day as adults. But then I see trailers for stuff like The Boss, Dirty Grandpa, Brothers Grimsby, Zoolander 2, Whisky Tango Foxtrot...and I just get so discouraged with the current state of comedy. It's so God-awful and cringeworthy.

Neighbors 2 might be okay. I didn't really like the first one at all, but holy hell, the amount of attractive ladies in the sequel might be enough for me. I hate the physical comedy of modern movies. Example: the air bag CGI scene in Neighbors. It's equivalent to jump scares of horror films. Cheap tricks that don't require any thought or involvement on the viewers part.

Some comedies I am looking forward to: Super Troopers 2, Keanu, The Nice Guys, Swiss Army Man, Weiner-Dog. Basically films that are independently funded or come from film festivals.

Clearly I/we are in the minority though. The only reason these really un-funny comedies get funded by big studios is because they bring in lots of money to the box office. So clearly there is an audience for them. I'm just not part of that audience.
