I read on another site a very similar thing with BD movies through Netflix having the same cracks. Alot of people live in very cold environments and some (like us) have mailboxes outside. Metal, uninsulated unheated mailboxes.
If rental companies start having to pay for alot of replaced discs due to cracking from cold weather, it is gonna be an issue... I doubt Sony or whatever studio produces these discs is gonna replace them for free.
Thanks for your help and yes this is costing us a lot of money. The bottom line is that in the future we might not be able to provide PS3 game rentals. It takes us about 6 months to start making money with a PS3 game so if it breaks early we are losing income...

Also on which other site did you read a similar thing with Netflix? This would proove we aren't completely crazy, maybe just a little.

thanks!

Nobody ever said they were indestructible. The idea is they are less susceptible to scratches. So, they should get through rough handling by children and rental situations with better results.

I don't think people should expect them to survive being used as wheels on a kid's downhill racer, or something like that.

I would consider a crack that develops easily as a manufacturing defect, and should be covered by basic warrantees as such. These things are still pretty new, so it is possible some overstressing is occuring somewhere in the process. I'm sure Sony DADC would love to see these discs. I would suggest you call up Sony and discuss it.

Have you called Sony DADC about this? This sounds like a manufacturing defect to me.

I did an informal survey on AVSF about Netflix-like movie rentals, and I from that the problems were occuring with HD DVDs. About 25% of people claimed to have had problems playing due to scratches. Only a 4% claimed to have problems with BDs.

Best Buy has offered to sell me a $5 warranty for the discs and have informed their cashiers to suggest it by saying they are seeing quite a few discs coming back to stores which are damaged.

Best Buy sure loves to sell warranties to people. On my laptop they wanted to sell me a $400 warranty on a $800 laptop.

As written earlier somebody wrote that Netflix members were having issues with Blu-Ray discs breaking in the way I posted. To my knowledge the technology is the same so issues should be the same for movies and games.

Regarding contacting Sony, I probably have to find a good contact, not a 1-800 information line. I'll look into it ASAP. Also I forgot yesterday to put game discs out yesterday and the temperature is kind of mild so I will do another test with hard cases ASAP.

thanks and please keep posting feedback!

I live in Sweden and have ordered 4 PS3 games and 20 something BD movies from the US so far. Those discs have been in the air, on the sea and over land in cold weather and I have not a single crack och scratch on any of them. I eaven recieved some of them that were laying loose in the cases, not a scratch or crack on them either. Could this be caused by anything else?

Still receiving broken games like this one.

I am now in contact with the Media Company that makes them so I will do my best to get to the bottom of this. Hopefully with all the samples I have of broken games they will be able to find a solution!

chiefrock,
I'm sorry to hear about your continuing troubles - and I seem to recall that somebody commented that these shipping woes are costing you because you are in the rental business.

I live in much warmer climates - but have been receiving disks from Amazon (from wherever they ship) and just received the Chronos replacement disk from R&B Films (from NJ). I know that NJ just experienced really cold conditions last week. Nevertheless, the disk came through unscathed.

Could it be that the games are copied onto disks without proper coating?

Rup.

Try putting a blu-ray movie in the freezer over night. Then take it out directly and put it in boiling water. See what happens.

Here is a suggestion take 2 factory sealed BLU-RAY discs and place them in a freezer for 48 hours. Also take 2 factory sealed DVD’s and place them in the same freezer with the BLU-RAY discs for 48 hours.
After the 48 hours is up let them thaw out and see if any of the BLU-RAY discs or DVD’s are damaged. You might want to repeat this experiment.
If no damage occurs then it could be other reasons why the discs are breaking. Also if one were to drop a disc that is frozen or very cold it could get cracked. Perhaps renters are abusing the discs and leaving them in cars over night and the discs get frozen and some how people are dropping the case and the discs get cracked under frozen conditions.
Just some ideas.

I wouldn't think the discs would crack from the cold. Surely the discs were tested for extreme temperatures. I would suspect something else like Canada Posts handling procedures maybe. I live in Northern Minnesota and have receives BD discs in -40 degree temperatures.

LMAO...That should crack just about anything!

Seriously, just being cold should not do anything. Rapid cooling and then heating (or vice versa) usually can cause something to crack. Just being cold by itself is usually not the issue. Whoever that supplier is should be intensely questioned about what they are doing to this discs. These discs come from very few places in the world. For a company to theorectically be receiving so many of these "cracked" discs others companies in the surrounding delivery area should be experiencing the same thing. Not only that, but this should be widespread throughout the climate region. I must admit...this sounds very suspect.

I live in northern IL. and have been buying games and movies since I got my ps3 (Dec. 18th). I haven't gotten a single bad disc from any store or from amazon even during the -20-40F spell in January.
I have never seen a optical disc crack at the edge like that except LD's. I think its more likely that the mail sorting machines are the culprit.
FWIW some of the mail rental(gamefly) places put a cardboard bi-fold wraparound to protect the discs for shipping.
