Bluray is good and all, it is a much sharper picture, but i feel like it isnt anything to kill for. I like blu, and wont go back to dvds, but I feel like it isnt worth $700 for a player (granted i didnt spend that much but you get the idea)

Please dont slam me by saying my setup sucks because thats not the case, and thats just really immature and ignorant. So of corse I expect people to attack me in immature ways.
If most players would actually cost $700 (and the films $100): yeah, i'd have some problem justifying it as well.

Since i pay about as much for my BDs than for my DVDs: Hell yeah, it's underrated!

Add to this the fact that the image is blown up to a 100+ foot screen and your arguement is moot.
did you just say theaters have better quality than blu-ray...wow you need to get your eyes checked!

Well my BD player + upscaling DVD player + CD player + multichannel SACD player cost a total about 499 with some other goodies thrown in I don't use like a game and some other internet stuff.

When you throw a DVD image on a big screen, DVDs are the ones that are overrated

About what you get on the average film presentation vs the most excellent theatrical presentation vs the original negative vs the DI vs BD vs DVD there are a few posts and threads around...

I didn't say that theaters look better. I did say that they have better resolution. I also said that the projection size of the image is massively larger. If you were to set up the theatre projector to the same size as a home theatre screen, then you'd see that the film is much higher quality.

Well, technically, that isn't always the case where the theatre doesn't look good. Have you seen a proper digital cinema presentation on a theatrical screen yet? Holy shit does that look good. Blu-ray projected to that size would probably look the same as film projected. But, the digital cinema quality is slightly better than Blu-ray at 12 or more times the size of the standard home screen.

Not really a valid point. Blu-ray viewed in a proper setup is phenomenally improved upon over DVD... even if DVDs are being watched on a 21" tube television. Colour and clarity of a Blu-ray is better in EVERY case. Certainly not as much on an smaller TV, but there is still a big difference. When I first got my PS3 I had a 21" tube TV for 3 weeks and it was still an astounding difference between DVD and Blu-ray playback quality.

I think Blu-ray is worth whatever you can afford to put into it whether it be $300 for a player or $3,000 as long as you at least have a 720p HDTV and a decent audio system. Wait until the holidays in Nov - Dec and I'm sure you'll find a BD player worth buying.

yeah blu ray sucks im so glad i bought a HD player

i think i know what he is trying to say that wow factor thing. But i think familairty breeds contempt. You get used to a HD set up and the appreciation starts to wear off a bit. I am no longer so blown way when i watch sports and stuff on sky HD but its the only was i would watch sport now.

This is about the most pointless thread I think I've ever read here at blu-ray.com

Of course we don't think it's overrated or we wouldn't have blu-ray movies, a blu-ray player, and an HDTV. And you obviously don't think it's overrated too or you wouldn't have these things either.

I think what you meant to ask was if we think spending over $800 on a blu-ray player is ridiculous. And I think most of us would say yes.

What it boils down to is that we get what we think we need or in some cases what we want and we almost always get what we think we can afford. So blu-ray is not overrated, but it may be too expensive for some people.

I think everyone has a right to their opinion

I have not seen a movie in blu-ray yet. I plan to get my first HDTV and my first Blu-ray player (which most likely will be a Play Station 3) for my room sometime this year or next year. I do have Enchanted on Blu-ray and I do plan to buy movies on Blu-ray, since I know I will be getting a HDTV and a Blu-ray player.

I am still going to purchase dvds though. For movies that I like enough to buy I will get them in blu-ray and for movies that I really like I will get them in blu-ray and dvd. I like to collect Disney dvds and I am not going to stop just because Blu-ray is out. Sleeping Beauty is one of my favorite films, so I pre-ordered that on Blu-ray and Dvd and I know about the extra bonus dvd on the blu-ray edition, but I still wanted the 2 disc Platinum dvd Edition. In fact I will still watch Sleeping Beauty on vhs.

I have seen some previews of Blu-ray so I have an idea, but once I start watching movies in Blu-ray on my HDTV (Sleeping Beauty will be the first Blu-ray movie that I watch) I will have a better idea.

No, Blu Ray is not overated! There is a plain and simply answer to your original question. I have a high end movie theater in my home built by a Home theater company. When I upgraded to Blu Ray, the jump in sound and picture was huge! So Blu Ray kicks a$$!
