PS3 already upscales MPEG videos playing from XMB...??? - Blu-ray Forum

I just had this thought today.

I have Hitachi RP CRT HDTV with 1080i.

When I play SD DVD on PS3 my HDTV blinks several times then shows 408p on the screen and then DVD starts playing.

Now, when I play SD MPEG videos from internal HDD, MS, or data DVD or data BD-RE, my HDTV stays at 1080i.

Does this mean that PS3 doesn't upscale DVDs (yet) but upscales SD MPEG videos when playing from XMB?

Anybody has any thought/theory?

might be your tv up scalling are you running yellow dog linux on your ps3

Yes, my TV upscales to 1080i when it gets 480i or 480p signal. When I press Info button on TV remote it shows what signal it is getting from the source.

In case with PS3 and SD DVDs it shows 480p, so, it is getting 480p out from PS3.

In case of SD MPEG files playing from XMB, my TV shows 1080i, so it is getting 1080i out from PS3.

And I don't run YDL on my PS3.

If he is actually playing video, I doubt that he is running YDL, at least not without some modifications.

I was running YDL, but I couldn't find a video player that would actually play anything.... Totem is CRAP! I use MPlayer on my FC-6 box, but when I tried to compile MPlayer on the PPC YDL install, it shot craps on me, so I switched the OS to FC-5, now the problem is that Sony hasn't given anyone but the YDL people the stinking drivers for the video and the audio (the bastards)

I just found a site with instructions to get a player working, I will see if it works tomorrow. Till then, does anyone have any idea for a good GUI based media player that is either:

A. Already compiled for the PPC verson of YDL
B. "Compile-able" under YDL for PPC?

Try VideoLAN, there should be various compiles to meet your needs.

Mozartman, you are correct...the PS3 does NOT upscale std DVD's. I dont know about the mpegs.

If it doesn't upscale DVD's, then why would it upscale MPEGs? It doesn't upscale, it's that simple.

However, there are rumors about a new firmware including FSAA image processing to upscale PS2 games - and probably DVD's too - to 720p.

I understand that theory.
But why my TV doesn't switch to 480p when playing SD videos from XMB and stays at 1080i?

I haven't tried ripped VOBs off DVDs then renamed MPEG yet. I've tried 480p MP4 files and it's played at 480p.
