I use a PS3 and update for three reasons:
  1. to get new functionalities (both for BD and gaming)
  2. because the PS3 doesn't let me go on the PSN store if I don't have the latest update
  3. to fix problems (never occured, but hypothetically speaking)

so I decide to check what version of FW I have, it's 3.95....also I realized the player is a s301 not a s300 ....

what is the difference between the two??? the manual lists them both on the cover

Default Pioneer BDP-LX70 Firmware

I updated the firmware (from 2.0 to 2.47) because the 70 did not play 2 new Paramount titles.

Since then I have lost the region free ability of the player for both BD and DVD, but load times are now almost instantaneous - they used to take up to 3-4 minutes.

Because of the loss of region free playing on the 70 I had to purchase an Oppo DV-980H to play DVDs, and this player handles all regions easily. Most of my DVD titles are a mix of Region 1 and 3 with the occasional region 2, but I cannot now play any region B BDs, which is not much of a problem, as most of my purchases are from Amazon USA.

It doesn't matter if I am updating the firmware on my BR player, my iPhone, or my laptop BIOS. I update the firmware for all of the above products because issues get fixed, features get added, and stability gets improved.

It is not a "barrier" when manufacturers improve their product.

[EDIT:] I am usually very proactive about getting the latest firmware, the only time I was blocked by firmware was when I needed to update the firmware on my S300 to play "V for Vendetta" .
I agree with all of the above.

I had to update to play 3:10 to Yuma. It was a very eazy thing to do.
