Oct. 4th: Candyman (dvd)

Based on a short-story by Clive Barker although when looking up what year it was made in Wiki, looks like his short story wasn't really a slasher. This movie is from 1992 and at least in the first one, seems kind of like the bloody mary story I heard growing up, at least some of it and it's also tied to urban legends. Anyway, pretty good horror movie so definitely worth checking out. It looks pretty good upconverted at times and just so-so at times. Sound is adequate but maybe not quite as good as I had hoped since the sound is a big part of the movie for me.

Rating: 4/5

Also, reading the wiki entry, thought this was interesting since Cabrini-Green is actually part of the movie and there are gang members in it as well. I figured it was really shot somewhere else.

Quote:
Exterior, hallway and stairway scenes were actually filmed in Cabrini-Green, though the producers had to make a deal with the ruling gang members to put them in the movie as extras to ensure the cast and crew's safety during filming. Even with this arrangement, a sniper put a bullet through the production van on the last day of filming, though no one was injured.

I watched that and Midnight Meat Train last night. Got me in the mood for some more horror. Pulled out some of my DVD's for the next few days,

CHUD
Humanoids From The Deep
Piranha
The Re-Animator
Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Creepshow

I'll see how long it takes to watch these, and probably pull a few more out.

I really like old school effects when it comes to horror and there was quite a bit of CGI gore, but it didn't distract me like it normally does. I think for being on a smaller budget they did a great job.

October 12 - Curse of the Devil (1973)

This is a foreign movie that is dubbed in english and is one movie in the anchor bay The Devil made me do it pack. This movie is really bad, the only saving grace it has is several nude shots. The overall premise goes something like this... This one guys family gets cursed and his descendants are now cursed as well, he ultimately turns into a werewolf and preceeds to knock off a few people in town. If it weren't for my many years of experience with MST3K, this movie would have been too much to bear, but a bit of joking can make it a campy movie worth viewing, maybe once.

1.5/5

October 13th - The Ruins (2007)

I won't go to much into the plot of this one as it's a new blu-ray and most have seen or heard of it. My thoughts on this are pretty torn between liking the setup and not liking plant effects. I must say that towards the end of the movie, desperation really sets in and becomes an eery movie to watch. Overall, a good blu-ray movie. I was watching one of the extras and was surprised to see Ben Stiller attached to this movie. There is a great nude scene from the blond, a short scene but there none-the-less.

I watched the blu-ray version of this movie, the PQ was excellent as was the AQ....this was a blind buy and I'll keep this one in my collection.

How did you like the
[Show spoiler]"surgery" scene on the guy with the broken back
?

Absolutely do not read this if your planning on watching this movie.

It was pretty disturbing, the thing about this movie is it takes people and turns them into something else, something that they'd never ever consider doing, but have to out of desperation.

That scene reminded me of a Takashi Miike film

I really liked the movie and liked the idea of
[Show spoiler]the plants being behind everything. But, the implementation of that was sometimes more silly than anything else (imo). Wish they would have changed some of that just a little.

I actually looked away during some of that scene but went back later to watch it. Anyway, one of the goriest scenes I've seen in a while and not sure what's up with my looking away. I've seen so many horror movies that gore doesn't normally affect me but that movie and at least one other one has made me look away recently (trying to recall the other one but at the moment I'm drawing a blank).

I'll admit it,
[Show spoiler] I cringed a bit when he bashed his leg with the rock, then started cutting. Did you watch the special features yet? The documentary on the prosthetics was pretty interesting. Nice to see some people like to do things the old fashioned way, CGI just wouldn't have the same effect IMO.

No, I just briefly checked the special features and missed that. Thanks for the info, I'll check it out.

Exactly! the setup was great, but the execution was just a little below of what I'm used too. This was a first time director, I beileve, of a bigger budget film.
[Show spoiler]A solid effort and if you can overlook some of the cheesy-ness of the plants, then you'll enjoy the movie. Seeing them imitate sounds from people was kinda creepy and very original, however I would have liked to see it done a bit differently

With all that said, it was a good movie that I'll def. keep in my collection.

This should be an interesting 31 Days of Halloween.

The Ruins deserves more than 3.5/5 it gets a 4/5 in my book.

Yes it should be One of the reasons for starting this thread is to share titles that you enjoy, that may not be mainstream.

The Ruins is a good movie, but I'll have to stick to my -1.5 deduction. It may grow on me more over time as some movies have...
[Show spoiler]The -1.0 was for the cheesy plant CG effects that I thought could have been improved. The -0.5 was for the lack of story elements, I would have enjoyed more about the back story etc.
not sure if thats a spoiler or not, just wanted to make sure.

Again, good movie, may grow on me, but I'll def. keep this in my collection.

I wish I would have liked this movie, but all I kept thinking was...
[Show spoiler]why don't they just burn the damn plants! They have alcohol and a lighter. Why didn't the people who live there burn the damn things?! C'mon!

#14 Otis - Blu-Ray This movie starts out creepy as hell. In fact, the first hour or so is terrifying. The premise is extremely unsettling and almost too horrible to watch. Then... around the 1 hour mark, the movie suddenly, and without warning, turns into a comedy. The characters change and the entire movie loses everything it had been building on. My girlfriend and I almost turned it off several times, but we just had to see how it ended.

The consensus: One of the worst movies we've ever seen. Big no.

October 15 - The Devil's Chair (2006)

I rented this movie based on jkwest recommendation. To start off, we see a young couple who stumble into this old asylum and find a chair. They drop acid and the girl dies in the chair. They put the guy away in an asylum for the insane.

A writer wants to take him back to the place where it happened, since he's writing a book about the incident and there in lies where the action starts. I don't want to give away any spoilers about the movie, but one thing is clear, this is a gory movie and there is no comic relief.

Only read if you have seen the movie.
[Show spoiler]This movie really delved into the mind of the serial killer, and how crazy their reality is. The part where it seems the chair is sucking people into an alternate reality and then the demon is killing them.....that's all in the serial killers head, and the big twist is there is no chair. The ending is just plain creepy and all hope is lost.

This is not one for the squeamish, but a great horror movie none the less. I give it a solid 4/5. The narration is the big drawback, with a few flaws here and there. Recommended. I watched the DVD upconverted and it looked great, it has a real gritty feel to the film, for those that do not like shaking cameras, stay away.

I could see that, but, I really enjoyed his narration...I think it added to the effect of telling "us" a story...

glad you liked it!!
