But we're not talking about the novel. The film is a seperate entity, and I don't really think it's that interesting to just refer to the source material.

That long intro is a great and unique experience, to me it sets the tone and mood of the film without ever seeing a scene or hearing a line.

actually the 3 minutes has very real significance:

the first 3-4 min = beginning of earth until dawn of man = 4 billion years

the 0.2 second shot (bone to rocket) = dawn of man to space age = 3 million years

thus, the 4 billion years/3-4min ratio is the same as 3 million years/0.2 seconds ratio.

in other words, 15 million years/sec is going by in the first 3 minutes and in the bone-to-rocket shot.

I don't mind it because music is the majority of the movie, anyway. There is very little dialog.

Cool

Think of it this way. You can sit through 3 minutes of intro music where as the movie has already started, or sit through 5 more minutes of previews.

Show of hands for intro music.

Show of hands for more preview crap.

I don't have a problem with black. People or screens, either way; beautiful to look at.

True. Actually, it's nothing unique to 2001. Overtures and Intermissions were fairly common in the golden age of cinema. When Lawrence of Arabia is released on Blu at long last, we'll hear these same questions all over again.

Default Reason for the black screen

The "spacey" intro music was a mood setting device for people that were being seated in the theater prior to the beginning of the movie. This was particularly effective for the large Cinerama theaters when the movie was released in 1968. When I saw the movie back then, there were no coming attractions - just the intro music, then the screen curtains opened when "Thus Spake Zarathustra" began with the space shot of the sun rising over the earth. Highly effective.

Fox at least puts "Overture", "Exit Music", etc. title cards on screen for its ex-roadshow musicals/epics, it's only MGM (from old Warner masters) that seems to be the Black-Screen offender...

(And if PS Network hints are any indication, expect the same questions about "Doctor Zhivago", too...)

Yet another one of these threads. Let's get to the point. 2001 is one of the most incredible films ever made. If you disagree... then god help you.

If they're that far gone, I don't think even god can help them.

The first scene is the one at the beginning with the black screen and the music. There is nothing wrong with your PS3.

Thats because it is a copy of the original movie which had what is termed a "Playin", music that played while audiences walked in a became seated. When the "playin" finished the curtains would open an the movie began.
