I am still on my original 80 GB PS3 from January 2008, so it isn't too old yet. Knock on wood.

I have the feeling I'm just unlucky in this particular situation.

It's just so frustrating because I'm locked in! Too much money invested in games/accessories to totally abandon the platform, but yet, too many invaluable features to live without it. The PS3 is such a woman.

No problems with either of my 60-gig PS3s. I bought one around launch time (US) and one when the folding@home client was released.

December of '06 60 GB system. Mine hasn't been turned off since sometime in April. Over a half of a year of Folding and just forgetting that it's been on. I also watch Blu's or play games nearly every day. Sony built an indestructible machine.

Sorry to hear about everyone else's bad luck.

sounds like some people got unlucky unfortunately, my ps3 still works perfectly (about a year in) and my brother's and cousins' (3 total) haven't had a single problem either. that said i don't know a single person whose 360 hasn't died on them or broke at least once

My 40gb's bd drive has taken a shit on itself twice since purchase at the end of Nov 07. Each time it was a warranted repair that didn't cost me anything other than being without it for the 2-3 weeks turn around time. People outside of their warranty have told me $150 charge by SCEA to repair theirs.

FYI the refurbs have a 90 day warranty, vs no warranty as the OP want's to believe.

So far I'm about 5 months into my 2d repair without an issue. This time around my system is noticeable louder, namely the fan. I don't know if they put in an upgraded fan or the original was defective and might have caused it to overheat. But I shouldn't have a thermal issue with the lite use it get's, plus it was out on the coffee table in the A/C...no way there should be a thermal "issue".

Let me add that both times I *casually* noticed that I had left the game playing on pause or at the menu screen rather than stopping gameplay and going to the XMB. Both times, the next day it was dead. I make double sure to shutdown the whole thing when I stop now and never ever leave it on a game or movie menu screen.

My 40gig PS3 burped up a BD drive at 10 months while watching Godfather 1. Sony's warranty service was easy and quick (1 week turnaround) and I received my original unit repaired with a 90-day warranty. It's been two days, and so far so good. BTW, the unit is in a cabinet, always kept open during playback, and is oriented vertically. By way of coincidence, the Directv HD receiver (the silver housing type), which also runs wicked hot, gave it up the same week. The replacement Directv HD receiver (black housing type) is running 30-40 deg cooler. I think heat is assassinating these things.

My Blu-ray Diode has died out once, and I had extended warranty from Future Shop. That's it however, no total system failure.

So far I'm only down one PS3, and I think the new 2.5 update with the auto shutoff from inactivity will help save it's lifespan. I have a bad habit of leaving it spinning a disc for days on end before I go back and play it. (It needs a sleep timer, not an inactivity timer!)
