I am all for firmware upgrades offering more features on the PS3. Just remember not every feature can be done in software. If the hardware in the PS3 does not support a certain feature then the firmware can not be updated.
I doubt the PS3 current hardware is every going to support 1080P/24. Has anyone taken the PS3 apart and looked at the video chip that is being used in the PS3? Unless that video chip supports 1080P/24 no firmware could possible add that feature. If the PS3 could do 1080P/24 Sony would most likely would have shipped the PS3 with that feature since Nov 17th. There have been many 1080P/60 BLU-RAY players released on the market from several manufactories and none of them can be upgraded to 1080P/24 support since the hardware does not support it. My point is to be cautious when hearing rumors of new features. Until the new features appear on a product one has to awesome the product may never offer that feature. Technically in theory since the PS3 does not have a hardware upscaler and only a down scaler it still should be possible to write a program to have a DVD software upscale feature. Then again unless we see it in a firmware update one needs to consider the possibility the PS3 current hardware will never upscale. Most HDTV displays already upscale all images to 1080I or 1080P and this is a minor issue. Even if the PS3 offered an upscale feature one might want to turn it off in the PS3 if the HDTV display has a higher quality upscale feature. There are many people that turn the upscale feature off in the DVD player and use the better quality one in their display. Then other times one can turn the upscale feature off on the HDTV display if they own a expensive DVD player with better quality up scaling. Many times with poor quality upscale its better to watch DVD’s in 480P. |

I'm very excited about the new update. It's taking some time, but sony seems to be ironing out all the bugs in the ps3. I wonder what the size of the update file will be for this update? So far, update sized have been under 100 MB, so I would think that this update will be under 100MB. Not that downloading a file over 100 MB is a problem for me since I have broadband.

We have not had a single issue with our PS3. Works perfectly and now I would like new features. 1080/24p was said to be coming for the PS3. I could do with out it if we can get network shares to play movies over our networks. I have all of our DVD collection stored on HD waiting for some kind of decent media player to play them.

There's no telling what we'll get with the next ps3 update as it's be a while we've recieved a ps3 update. Playing ps3 games on the psp would be nice, but would you choose the portable screen over your tv screen? I know what I want to see more then a new update, a ps3 game that uses the psp somehow. This idea was canned for f1 racing and it would be so cool to use the handheld somehow. We have great games and good updates for the ps3.
We need a ps3 game to use the psp somehow. If we had a game that used the psp, I think demand would go up for the ps3 and psp because microsoft doesn't have a handheld, although nintendo could beat out sony with the same idea. |

That is the idea, but we have yet to see a game that uses the psp. You use the psp as an additional controller for something that is only optional, but not required. Maybe there will be a racing game that would use the psp as a rearview mirror. The idea isn't required, but optional

Network shares would be a great thing, and I was really surprised that it wasn't included with the original release. My plasma supports this through a microsoft program, the name escapes me. Media connector or something like that. I'm not surprised that sony didn't include that peticular program in the PS3, but proprietary software from microsoft wouldn't be necessary. There are many possibilities through TCP/IP.
One thing that bugs me though, is the option to install other OS's. What is this option for? Will we eventually be able to install Linux, Windows, etc.? |

From what I know, you can install Linux if you want to. I have no idea about where you download the OS from, but I think you download two files, one is the installer package and there's a second file you get. I don't know why you would have linux installed. If you want more information, you can go to the playstation website at www.playstation.com and click on the ps3 tab.

Some more info from the Euro 1.6 press release
Firmware Version 1.60 also delivers a more convenient process for downloading content to the PS3 from the PLAYSTATION Store. Up to 6 pieces of content from the PlayStation store can be queued up for download while the user enjoys other functions of the PS3 system, including playing games, browsing the web, using media functions including photo browsing, video and music playback. Progress of downloads can be easily tracked under a new Download Management menu under the XMB’s Network icon(2). Firmware 1.60 also provides support for keyboards and mice enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology. Text entry is further expanded with the option to use a full QWERTY on-screen keyboard, in addition to the existing single tap keyboard. PS3’s built-in Web browser is also enhanced with the ability to zoom in to the optimal viewing size for the selected area of a Web page at the press of a button, as well as an optional tool for reducing flicker when the PS3 system is using interlaced video out (480i or 1080i). |

Is upscaling really that important?

If demand is high enough, then maybe sony can include it in a future firmware update. Ken said that there would be no upscaling before the ps3 came out. Is there a chance that upscaling wouldn't work with certain ps2 and ps1 games?

upscaling is huge. it is the only reason i keep my sammy hooked up to my main system. while not knowing all the details, it uses something like line doubling or pixel doubling. the end result is the creation of something you might see on hbo or showtime hd. as soon as the ps3 scaler is enabled for dvd content, the sammy moves to the bedroom.
