My opinion has always been that the books are two sets of trilogies bridged by The Goblet of Fire. When I began reading Order of the Phoenix I found it really depressing as it is a huge departure from the preceding books, with the realization that Harry (and everyone else's) world has changed to one that is now at the dawn of a conflict. The feeling of doom is somewhat stifling, but once I adapted my mindset, I found the change in direction utterly compelling.

I think Hermoine's words at the end of GoF sum it up completely:

""Everything is going to change now, isn't it?""

Early reports on the changes/cuts to the story in the script of The Half Blood Prince points to disappointment. I hope what I've read from several sources is incorrect, or at least that the delay in the release of the movie is due to some re-balancing of the movie's plot.

Unfortunately the Half Blood Prince movie cuts a lot out from the book. Especially some very key scenes and characters. I will not post what i know even in spoilers but if you truly want to know what is posted as the movie is finished i will be happy to link and advise as to what is known about it.

Default Blu Thoughts On Potter

[QUOTE=ricky tee78;1256811]Harry potter 1 & 2 were directed by the same guy (chris columbus) that directed Home Alone, which is evident because they are very.... warm and fun. They are more... cheerful. My personal favorites

I missed the warm and fun feeling I got from the first two. I wish they didn't get rid of the first director. The movies after the first two are dark lose replayability.

I didn't really like harry potter till the 4th film the 1st one was children who could not act yet. 2nd more of the same. 3rd was the worst very boring. 4th told more of a story and the fifth was kind of a set up for what will come next.
Reading a book and then seeing it in film never works. I think at this point everyone will go just to see how it all ends.

READ THE BOOKS!
It is clear in the books that the stories get darker and darker. In fact, they are intended to appeal people of the same age as Harry, which means it will get more adult as it goes.
It starts out fun and light hearted, and through the years, it gets more serious.
The next movie has a lot of potential to be a dark movie as well, in fact, it will probably be the darkest so far. But that last book is the darkest for sure, and I expect the movie(s) to reflect that as well.
So the important thing here is, if you read the books, you'd already know it gets very dark before it gets lighter.

Honestly, I think the story was never about the boy wizard, but more about the Dark Wizard. He gains more focus as the series progresses. I suppose you could say Harry and Voldemort are equally important.
Either way, you will start to see more of the dark nature of the later books in the movies, especially since book/movie 5.

When the first one came out, the target viewers were around the age of 12. That movie was in 2001. Those 12 year olds who are their "loyal fanbase" have aged 8 years since then, making them 20.

Those 20 year olds are looking for the darker films. The movie studios are delivering what they expect to be the most profitable for them.

That's incorrect. They are making movies that are in keeping with the tone of the books, which is progressively darker. If nothing else the movies have followed the books very well in that aspect.

That's nothing compared to Babe 2 : pig in the City. Talk about a film getting dark.

Aren't kids growing up with these movies? They can use a little downer. Look at Empire Strikes Back. That was pretty dark

I'm not going to see this one in the theater but if the Blu Ray version is too dark ... I'll just raise the brightness setting on my projector whenever I watch it.

While the books most certainly get darker, there are a lot of funny moments that have been omitted from the films which could have lightened the mood.

My biggest issues have been:

1. Changes that affect interactions with the main characters, i.e. throughout Goblet of Fire there is supposed to be a thread of suspicion surrounding Harry because of the Quidditch World Cup and his entry into the Triwizard Tournament. However, this is nullified by the appearance of Barty Crouch, Jr at the beginning of the film.

2. Inconsistencies between films, i.e. Hagrid's Hut and The Whomping Willow move between films 2 and 3 and in the fifth film Umbridge magically destroys the entrance to the Room of Requirement, which would make the room unusable in future films.

The rumor of the sixth film that most worries me is:
[Show spoiler]When Dumbledore is killed on the tower instead of Harry being immobilized and thus giving Draco the opportunity to stun Dumbledore, Albus sends Harry await and he hides underneath looking up through a peep hole.
