Maybe it's just a batch of bad discs and not the entire run. Mine plays fine in my PS3. This movie is pretty awesome. VERY thought provoking. If you are able, check out "Chronos", another amazing release from the same director.

My player is a S350. Now I have an LG BH200 and I tried the disc in that player. It also paused, but it was able to pickup where it left off and carry on at that point. Problem is there was about 10 such pauses by the end of the film! Major pain to have the film pause for 1-3 seconds and then continue, 10 times or so! I will be exchanging my copy too tomorrow and hope for the best. I have a theory... I think the tightly shrinkwrapped cardboard packaging may be causing a "micro-warpage" of the disc. I know in the old laserdisc days, warping would lead to playability issues.... |

I held the disc under a bright light and it was fine. I'll try doing a swap tomorrow, or even seeing if the Best Buy clerks will let me spin the disc in one of their Sony demo players. The exact spot is ch.19 1 hour, 13 minutes, 20 seconds.

I checked my disc and it was fine. I cleaned it even though it really did not need to be. Amazon is shipping me another one now. Hopefully this one is ok. The packaging does not help the disc at all. They should insert some type of cloth inside to protect it.

I checked my disc again and noticed some concentric scuffing. I'm pretty sure that the disc is minutely warped. The scuffing would be from the laser pickup in the dvd player making contact with the disc. Exact same thing used to happen to warped laserdiscs.
I cleaned the scuffs until the disc was clean and tried it again in my LG. It did the same pauses as before. I checked, and sure enough there were a few concentric scuffs again. I cleaned the disc and tried it in my Sony. It froze at the same spot. But, this time, when I chapter skipped to chapter 20, it played fine for the rest of the movie. The first time I played the movie on the S350, even when I chapter skipped, it acted up. No scuff marks when I checked this time. I'm now wondering if the packaging itself is the real culprit. Maybe once the shrink wrap is removed, the disc is slowly becoming "unwarped" as it no longer has that pressure to deal with. I'm still going to take it back to Best Buy and see what they say. It could simply be that the people that are having no issues, are getting copies that have slightly less shrink wrap tension. Have the other people who've noticed the freezeups and playability issues also noticed concentric scuff marks? |

This is really annoying, here they go to great lengths to produce an outstanding PQ and AQ BD and stick it in lousey packaging and to top it off the discs are defective. Apparently some players can play it it fine-WTF.

I picked up another copy of Baraka today. It seems worse than the first copy. It freezes up a couple of minutes before the lady in the water.
I really believe the issue is the packaging. The shrink wrap is simply warping these dvds, because there is no hard plastic keepcase to protect the fragile disc. I have the dvd in a spare blu-ray case and will see how it plays in a week or so. My theory is it will "de-warp" and play better in time. I'll post here how the movie fares in a week or so. |

I've also had the freezing issue with "Baraka". I've tried two different copies, both from Best Buy in Elk Grove, CA. Both freeze about 5-10 seconds into Ch. 19. When the disc freezes up, the playback also does some weird things when I try to skip ahead chapters or skip back chapters. Sometimes it will skip ahead a chapter and play fine. Other times, it will stay frozen. Same thing will happen when trying to skip back a chapter.
Other than the problem with Ch. 19, the rest of the disc plays totally fine. Looks and sounds great, too, by the way! I haven't checked yet to see if there are any surface blemishes or warping to the disc itself. I've also sent an email to MPI Video (the producers of the "Baraka" disc) to see if they were aware of any problems with the disc. I'll post any info I receive from them (if any!). I have a Sony BDP-BX1 (same unit as the BDP-S350) with the 010 firmware upgrade. |

It really seems like the environmentally "green" packaging on Baraka has defeated its own purpose.
Lots of customers who buy this disc may end up buying other "non-green" plastic cases to hold the disc more safely. Defective discs are being returned to stores and destined to eventually find their way to a land fill somewhere. At least the paperboard cases will decompose just fine. Don't know about the plastic discs. |

You'd think the manufacturer of the dvd would have the brains not to risk warping their product. I have a feeling this dvd will have one of the highest returns in the industry. I guess Roger Ebert must have been lucky enough to get a good copy ![]() |

It just occurred to me that the Sony S350 is an entry-level player. I'm wondering if the error correction circuitry is just too basic to handle warped discs?
I wonder how this disc would fare on the lastest Pioneer Elite blu-ray player? That jewel must be able to compensate for minor warpage... |
