Default Van Damme says no to Stallone's Expendables

I guess Stallone offered a part in the movie to JCVD personally and Jean Claude turned him down. Here's the story:

Quote:
Van Damme has recently enjoyed success with "JCVD," which was considered one of the better films at the Toronto Film Festival and big surprise for Van Damme fans. It soon became clear that he was looking to get back to some serious acting and stop pumping out straight-to-DVD movies.

Soon after, Van Damme announced that he will have a part in a new "Universal Soldier" movie, which is sure to be direct-to-video. Furthermore, Moviehole is reporting that he turned down Stallone to take part in his "Expandables" film, which is why Sly went to Lundgren.

Director Sheldon Lettich (Lionheart, Double Impact) who is a personal friend of Van-Damme, posted the following on his fansite [via AITH]: "Apparently, Sly was pissed too. Sly made the offer personally. They spoke on the phone for a half hour or so. JC apparently gave Sly the explanation about following a new and different career path for himself now.

It always interesting to pull off a PG-13 action movie, because you want it to look convincing enough, yet still meet the PG-13 rating. While people will go off and say it will suck because it's PG-13, go watch Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, the Bourne flicks, or the Transporter flicks to see well-staged, well-choreographed PG-13 action movies.

With this movie, I'm expecting Rambo and Friends

The latest news is that Sandra Bullock might be signing on to play a government agent (paired up with Forrest Whitaker) on the hunt for Stallone's crew. Bullock previously worked with Stallone in Demolition Man.

AICN has a review of the script and it's actually looking pretty good. Here's an excerpt from the review:

Quote:
While I'm sure Stallone did some research about how these things work in the War On Terror era, happily this is not one of these Greengrassian modern action movies that tries to seem completely reality based. This is a movie where a team of 5 can take on an army of 100, where armed men still sometimes engage in martial arts and fisticuffs, where many, many things blow up, where occasionally a character might have something sarcastic to say during combat. In other words, a good old fashioned action movie. An endangered species.

Barney is a very different character from Rambo. For one thing, his name is Barney. For another he talks in more than one sentence sometimes. He's almost a father figure to the team and finds himself always listening to other people's problems and trying to be supportive. The other character who gets the most screen time is the lovelorn Lee Christmas. He's supposed to be American but calls a guy "mate" at one point, which means he's played by Jason Statham. There's also Kong Kao, who will be played by Jet Li. He does alot of kicking, but is much more of a supporting character than Li usually plays. I do think it's a pretty good character for Li, though, because he gets some funny lines. He's an unhappy smartass, not the usual Li type of character.
Check out the full review here.

What do you think?

I read the entire script review earlier today and it sounds like Lundgren's character may be making more of a cameo which is a shame. I was hoping he'd have a major part in it.

Nevertheless this is my #1 Most Anticipated movie for 2009

Sly hasn't always been involved with the greatest films but both Rambo and Rocky Balboa both ended up being surprises to me.

I think he is very talented and will keep my fingers crossed for this one.

Wow, Dolph Lundgrin, Randy Couture (who was horrible in Scorpion King 2) and Jason Statham? Those would definitely be the ingredients of an instant B-movie.

Seriously, is there a way to get advanced tickets for this? I know they haven't even started filming yet but I still want a seat on opening night.

Sly's look for the Expendables

The man is 62!!!

Yeah, that’s what Sly Stallone looks like right now. I have no idea how, but this is how cut and tatt’d he’s going to appear in The Expendables, a good-ol’ fashioned action movie lensing next month.

The man’s in his sixties. Yeesh.

I can't wait to see this movie. What happened to the movie with him and DDP based off the "Unholy Two" from The Devils Rejects? Was that even seriously considered?
