Best PQ/AQ to date!

You would also enjoy just about any of the Pixar films!

If you like concerts and Dave Matthews, get his disc as well!

If I had to pick one, I'd say Iron Man.

You can't go wrong with either of these two:

1. Iron Man

2. Casino Royale -- Either the original release with the PCM track or the new 2-disc collector's edition with the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track. Either way you go, it's a win-win situation!

Both my #1 picks have been said, although it took a while for one to be said.

Iron Man & Casino Royals are high on my list, but when I got my BD player, I went straight for Blade Runner and I wasn't dissapointed. I mostly picked the blu because it had all 5 discs in one package, but the transfer is amazing, the darks are so clear and the sound is fantastic.

You're receiving some very good advice here. Of course the suggestion to follow your primary interest should give you direction.

There is good reason Pixar films are mentioned so often. First, the detail is amazing. They don't skimp on anything in their presentation -- creative design of characters, "set" designs, backgrounds, movement, sound -- just amazing creativity and skills.

Most important, their storytelling is without peer. Live action films rely so much on interesting locales, star power, action, special effects, etc, that the story often suffers. Not so with Pixar. Story is paramount. Always. The flow from set-up, character development, plot fulfillment, and satisfying ending is flawless. There is always an underlying moral to give the story purpose. Best of all, their stories resonate on multiple levels, so kids, teens, and adults can each experience something relevant. These guys really know their business.

When you put all of this together, you have a thing of real beauty. You just can't say that for most films. And you can get it all for the price a shiny little disk. A bargain in anyone's book.

I'd suggest Cars as a first choice. It's a classic. As an environmental engineer, your wife should really appreciate the sub-plot concerning transportation development. It's quite a history lesson.

I sure hope it's great. I can only imagine that it'll be a must-have reference disc as far as PQ and AQ.

Anyways, should I even bother buying a disc? Years and years ago I bought DVDs left and right. But I stopped because it became apparent I rarely watched them more than once. So you can cancel out suggesting the latest and greatest new release comedy or action flick.

How about Planet Earth? Is there a definitive BR disc I can buy to evaluate the picture quality on my new TV? Should I just buy AVIA or DVE on BR and call it a day? I can't imagine using it for anything other than renting discs (which I also haven't done since around 2005). I can't find myself buying DVDs, so I find it even harder to buy BRs which are even more expensive.

Wish the Nirvana Unplugged DVD was on BR HD. For some reason in my mid-twenties I just can't find the attention span to watch a scripted movie for 2 hours.
Planet Earth would be a good one for you.

Actually, I'm pretty sure people who got it early have said that while the picture is good, it's not mindblowing. The film would probably be amazing even in SD, but when talking only of picture quality, I don't think this one will come out on top. Must-have, probably, but I don't think this will prove to be the best choice for showing off the capabilities of the system.

And as for the person above, saying that Cars would be a good choice for environmental subplot reasons-- I'd say that Wall E covers that ground in a more effective, more engrossing, and more entertaining way.

Planet Earth is definitely a good choice if you like the nature shows. It is truly beautiful and a quite enjoyable watch. I'm not entirely sure how re-watchable it is though. Personally I rented it and I think that was enough for me.

I've heard magnificient things about Baraka as well, but have not seen it myself.

I know you said no latest/greatest action movies but I have to mention the Dark Knight. It is a fabulous movie and is expected to look stunning on Blu (though now I'm hearing early reports that it's not spectacular). If you have a family, go with Wall-E (have you seen the reviews on this site?!?)

Last suggestion I have is a concert Blu if: A - a favorite band of yours happens to have one; and B - if you have a stereo to take advantage of the excellent audio quality
