I absolutely agree with this 100%. PIP is not a new technology - it's been around for years in standard televisions.

How many times have I actually used this in the decades that it has been around - none that I can recall and if I ever did turn it on, it was briefly.

I just want great looking video and sound quality on ALL the available titles in the format that I chose.

I will only be buying new releases (meaning newly released movies) in blu-ray format.

I will only be buying older movies that are now being made available in HD on the blu-ray format as I already own them in DVD format. The studios will get a double dip from me if they release the movies on blu-ray, they will not get a triple dip....

I thought the problem was the software for PiP and BD-J aren't "ready for primetime," as HighDefDigest put it. You make it sound like it's just the hardware, but I don't get that logic (not being a$$hole, just saying). If they are waiting for the hardware mandate, then they could release titles now and people who get the new players would be ready for those features. And if they wait until Nov. 1st, there are still older players out there that can't use it. People keep talking of the Oct. 31st mandate, but I think they're confusing that w/ the fact that the software itself isn't ready. The deadline's just to make sure people can utilize the features.

If the software is the problem right now, then they're just waiting to do simultaneous releases when they can put those features on the BD disc. I'll reititerate, I thought the problem was that the software just isn't available yet, and when it will be, they'll have no issues w/ BD (in the sense of features). If I'm wrong, please correct me.

It's a little bit of both.

You need a base-line hardware specifications for BD Profile 1.1 and Profile 2.0. CEs can beef up the components themselves but all of their new players must meet the minimum spec. Based on this reference design, CE can start developing their own products.

Content owners however can't start working on Profile 1.1 and 2.0 discs until two things have been agreed upon: the reference design and the BD authoring software that capitalizes on this new reference design.

The October 31st is the STOP DATE of announcements of new BD players that do not meet Profile 1.1 Players 1.0 can still be sold, however.

So working backwards, BD titles that meet Profile 1.1/2.0 can already be released a month or two before that date. In fact, if the reference design is already approved and tested, we could see new titles as soon as June.
