It could only randomly play songs within a single disc. The Sony rep confirmed this for me after the fact. Nice.

My point is, while your argument is not without merit, your expectations of the average consumer (in other words 99.9% of the population) are far, far too great.
Yeah well it's normal.. people have the internet and still don't use it when they buy $$$$$ piece of equipement. For myself, when i bought my Z2000 for 2000$ I read every single net review and thread on AVS forum to make my conclusion.

But he must have bought he's play quite a while ago, before 1.1 was there i'am guessing so it's understandable..

Meh, my S300 plays every movie I throw at it. There are glitches every once and a while, but not enough for me to complain. I upgraded to the S350, haven't used any of the 1.1 or 2.0 features enough to make it worth an upgrade on that alone. I did it for bitstreaming HD audio, still using the S300 in another room though.

Some early DVD players had problems with later, more advanced discs. Many people had problems with their discs freezing up at layer switches. A real annoyance since you had to advance the disc to continue playback... sometimes you just couldn't move beyond that point on the disc and sometimes you couldn't play the disc at all! Here's a blast from the past, a couple of questions regarding dual layered discs and DVD player compatibility:

Quote:

The DVD specification is complex and open to interpretation. DVD-Video title authoring is also very complex. As with any new technology, there are compatibility problems. The DVD-Video standard has not changed substantially since it was finalized in 1996, but many players don't properly support it. Discs have become more complex as authoring tools improve, so recent discs often uncover engineering flaws in players. Some discs behave strangely or won't play at all in certain players. In some cases, manufacturers can fix the problem with an upgrade to the player (see 1.47). In other cases, disc producers need to reauthor the title to correct an authoring problem or to work around a player defect. Problems can also occur because of damaged or defective discs or because of a defective player.

What's a dual-layer disc? Will it work in all players?

The DVD specification requires that players and drives read dual-layer discs. There are very few units that have problems with dual-layer discs--this is a design flaw and should be corrected for free by the manufacturer. Some discs are designed with a "seamless layer change" that technically goes beyond what the DVD spec allows. This causes problems on a few older players.
So, welcome to the world of the early adopter. DVD had just as many, if not more issues when it was launched over a decade ago. Sometimes it's just easier to romanticize the past rather than accept it as it was.

Skip the PS3 and get a Panasonic DMP-BD35K. It's just as good if not better and about a $100.00 cheaper. I'm using a PS3 and plan to replace it with this same player.

Replaced mine with a Panny 35K. Best choice I've made since going Blu in Feb.

I absolutely agree.

This is one of the big reasons that Blu-ray is a tough sell to the general populace.

The "average" person knows they can buy a DVD player, and (region codes aside) it will play any DVD, and all features.

With Blu-ray, it's a freaking technological minefield of specs and strange words that the average person should not have to learn in order to get a player that will (gasp) play everything that comes out.

So true. Not to mention, a lot of stores that I go into don't even have player specs listed.

I completely agree. When I bought my first DVD player (a Samsung) I wasn't even an early adopter, I was still holding on to laserdiscs . I paid £250 for it, whereas now you can pick one up for less than £20. I bought 'There's Something about Mary' and it wouldn't even remotely play. I had to have the machine re-chipped to get it to work (which I did get done for free, but I did have to take it to a repair centre). Anybody that thinks DVD's have been perfect since day one are living in dream land.

It does make me wonder if some of these 'older' Blu-ray players could have new chips put it that would make them 1.1 compliant.

The $128 Wall-Mart Blu Ray player is profile 1.1

Of all the profiles... I like 1.1 the best. It does the picture in picture stuff but leaves off trying to make your blu ray player into an internet browser.

(My PS3 is profile 2.0 like all PS3's but I ignore the BD-Live stuff so far.)

I second that. I have a BDP-S1 & a PS3. I like the Panny the best. Man the PS3 is loud.

Just wondering if anyone's read this:

http://www.dvdfile.com/article/an-op...ociation-12958

Since I don't have a PS3, I agree with everything this guy says. (I do love my Pioneer BD player, though, despite it being Profile 1.0 and having slow load times on BD-J discs.)

and replaceing it with a $120 Progressive Scan

how often do you replace your cell phone,
or do you still carry "the Brick' ?? at $1 per minute

Yes he does. Most people don't sit on forums all day and compare and contrast specs from BD players.

Likewise, my launch RCA DVD player to this day has never had a single issue playing and DVD or any of its features...

BD is a whole 'nother story.
