The size/cost ratio is tough to beat and yes, DLP may be phased out down the road. Right now though, DLPs should be a major consideration if you want a large screen at a moderate price. I have two DLPs, one of which is 65", (a Toshiba). Blu-rays look gorgeous on this set, including Journey to the Center of the Earth. (I suspect that a larger set may provide a better 3D viewing experience.) Anytime someone views a Blu-ray on it, they are awed by the PQ.

Although I don't have one, I would consider a LCD or a Plasma but the prices would have to come down. Incidentally, the bulb cost for a DLP varies by model but I think is around $250-$300. Have had my Sammy 50 inch DLP now for three years and have yet to change the bulb, and it's on constantly.

Bottom line, make your selection based on what you like, not on what anyone on this forum says. Use our advice if you like, but remember these are our OPINIONS. Good hunting, my friend!

I have a Pioneer Elite 710HD RPTV - 64" screen, 480P resolution. We sit 12.5 feet from screen.

We are getting a Blu-ray player (Panansonic DMP=BD55) and a new reciever (Onkyo TX-SR876) for XMAS but aren't sure about the TV. Our RPTV Pioneer picture looks great to us with regular DVD and Direct TV HD and also looks good on the SD channels we watch a lot.

We have been looking at 65" Sharp LC-65SE94U (LCD) and 67" Samsung HL-67A750 (DLP).

We have become more concerned lately about PQ on the SD channels we watch. Quite a few programs between all family members. We ASSUMED that a new generation HDTV would be better than our old Pioneer in everything...noe we are hearing that SD channels on 1080P TV are not good.

How do you find SD channel viewing on LCD vs DLP?

Thanks

LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicone) is the same as the SXRD from sony. Those are great, wish I had one sometimes.
but the blobs (green on Sony, Yellow on JVC) are the downside and why they really don't make them any more. Light engine replacement = $1700 vs. a purchase price of $2000 when new - a lot of people are upset with a 2 yr old tv with blobs of color without an extended warranty

My Samsung DLP and my Magnavox LCD both handle SD channels nicely. My Westinghouse LCD not so much, but then it sux at everything. (Never buy Westinghouse!)

When shopping.. have them display some SD material so you can check for yourself.

The bigger the screen, the worse it looks

The content provider and it's compression method is also a big factor.

On a big set, the SD channels look blocky...so much so I don't really watch any SD channels if I can avoid it and if I must, I scan the digital channels before the analog in the clear cable channels.

I prefer DLP/LCOS over LCD mainly because the size/cost ratio is so much better on DLP's. I bought my 60" sxrd for under 2000.00 and the picture is fantastic. There is no way you can get an HDTV at that size in any other technology for that price.

<<The bigger the screen, the worse it looks>>

Thats my problem...we will have a 65" screen. On my 64" Pioneer Elite Pro 720HD RPTV the SD channels look pretty good.

<<On a big set, the SD channels look blocky...so much so I don't really watch any SD channels if I can avoid it and if I must, I scan the digital channels before the analog in the clear cable channels.>>

Unfortunately there are still a number of non-digital SD channels that my family watches.

I also prefer DLP over LCD. Don't get me wrong, some LCD's look great with big screen sizes, but you are gonna PAY for them! If you are looking for the best Cost\Size ratio you cannot beat DLP sets.
