Been there, lived in the forest (near a small town called Girdwood) for 6 months. Granted, it was during summer but I met a lot of folk who brave the winters out there and they've surivived many-a-trip to Dinali.

The kid in this story really was just an idiot. I can respect what he was trying to accomplish, but he went about it in a very un-educated way. Or, maybe he really wanted to commit suicide but couldn't bring himself to shoot/slit/ingest pills...

I rented "Into the Wild" from Netflix and watched it last night. The movie is a little slow paced but it was an amazing film. Into the Wild is a good example of why I love the movies (great story, great acting, and great directing).

I was worried about the replay value but I already want to watch it again and so I am going to order it today.

BTW, Paramound did a terrific job with the BD (PQ & SQ).

just saw this last night...phenomenal movie.

i will definitely buy!!! very high replay value IMO.

yes, the pace was slow, but its meant to be slow...i think the movie is making a point that life as we know it is too fast-paced, too material-based, and neglects the natural pace and natural purpose of life. i don't think we need to go live in isolated nature to have it though, but some may.

penn did a phenomeanl job directing. from panaramic shots, to closeups of flowers swaying with the camera, to shots of sunshine pierceing through tree branches up above.

This is why it's my number 2 favorite film of all time and also because I've lived most of what Chris went through in the film.

Surprisingly, there's some people who don't like Hiersch. To me, what made the film so powerful was the story, the writing, the directing, and last but not least the acting.

All elements in this film combine to make it outstanding.

Shouldn't be depressing! He's trying to show us to LIVE our lives, not be obsessed with material stuff. Guess it might be too aggressive or "hippy" for some, but I think it's a great movie and in no way depressing

I don't think it's depressing at all. Well, the only depressing part is that he didn't get to share his dream with anyone.

Don't forget the music. The Eddie Vedder soundtrack is a perfect complement to the movie. Love the movie and count me as another who doesn't find it depressing. I actually find it inspiring to get out more - makes me want to take another long bike trip.

Yeah the music was great too. It just wasn't the best part IMO.

If you ever experience what Chris goes through in this film, then you appreciate it even that much more like I have. It takes on a whole new meaning when you've lived it.

Hmmm. The film is indeed a bit hippy and self-indulgent, as was the main character. I mean, it's just a bit much. I liked it once, but it has zero replay value for me and it also reminds me of another real life wacko in a film who becomes one with nature (among other things) in Alaska: Grizzly Man.

Wow. I wouldn't make that comparison. I mean, "Grizzly Man" was a story about a man who believed he had a great connection with dangerous, wild bears whereas this is a story about a man who just wants to get away from society and all of it's various vices.

Either way, I loved "Into the Wild" and own it on blu-ray. I've told people within my circle of friends that it's required viewing and have yet to get a negative response to this film.

I think its a bit depressing. I didnt the first time i watched it but about the 3rd or 4th i do. The movie really is about how he made a bad decision, left his family and had noone to share his memories with and left those that cared for him behind again and again... great movie though...

I was/am a little shocked that the family (the Mom and Dad) was cool with the way they were portrayed in the film. That sort of struck me as odd that they would allow themselves to be shown as fraudulent parents.

The best part about this movie is that exactly what you expect to happen actually happens.

*spoilerrrssss*

Someone with no experience or knowledge necessary and indeed required to survive outdoors on their own proceeds to attempt to do so, and within the span of...what was it, 2 years? He dies.

Go figure.

The real lesson here is don't be a dumbass following your ideals to the grave unless you plan to take it seriously and literally gain the knowledge required to make such a drastic change in lifestyle.

The message the film tries to convey fails on every front because it relies on a story in which most if not all viewers could literally end it by saying "I could have told you that would happen, dipshit". What could have been a great film, something that was very well done from start to finish, is ruined for me because in the end his attempt to show us all that we can achieve our goals is ruined by the fact that he dies, which tells us that...no we can't!

lol......

....still don't get why everyone is so high on this film....

It's not like it was a mystery. Many of us read the book or the Outside magazine article before seeing the movie.

You're viewing it from a very different perspective than many of us who enjoy the movie. I don't see it as a challenge to see whether he can survive, but more of a journey to look at life and find happiness without all the usual trappings like a big house, car, TV, etc. If you've ever gone on an extended, self-supported journey on foot, bike, whatever, you'll probably find that you have a lot of thoughts about how you can simplify your life and question whether you need all the stuff you have. Obviously he took things to an extreme, but many of the basic themes in the movie are experienced by many on a much lesser scale. McCandless's biggest journey was starting out from the premise that he didn't need human relationships in his life only to discover that they were the real key to happiness.
