I disagree with this attitude that people need tipped. I'm not into subsidizing peoples wages or in a larger sense their choice of jobs, which is how I view tipping. Especially when I've already paid for, in this case, a delivery and shipping charge. And if you got that for free, then that's their own problem.

Too each his own. But I'd really like to know where this seeming entitlement to tips began...

I'm in the cable industry and tipping is not required nor is asked for (shouldn't be by any tech!), but with that being said it is always nice when a customer gives a tip or offers anything to drink. I do agree though with tipping with someone that delivers something I have ordered no matter wether it is food or electronics. My thing is that with delivery charges that companies include in the price of the merchandise is that most companies take a rather substantial cut from said fee, and the delivery person receives very little. All and all I say help thy neighbor during these times (or any for that matter), cause karma can be a......well you guys know the rest.

Doubtful. Highly.

If you don't tip, there is nothing wrong with offering a cold beverage. It shows that you are still human and care. An offering of any magnitude goes a long way.

However, those that won't or don't because of some form or another are asking for a serious case of bad karma.

I was a professional installer for a few years, and here are my 2 cents. Long story short, I don't do my job for tips and I never expect a tip under any circumstances. Along that line, you should never feel obligated to tip. As excellently worded earlier, a tip is a symbol of gratitude.

HOWEVER, if you see someone obviously putting in more than what they owe to you, throw a few bucks their way. There are times when I've driven hours out of my way, gone back to stores for people, picked up accessories, given out lots of advice, done other small jobs, worked on my day off, prevented jobs from getting rescheduled, moved old stuff out of the way, including furniture and 300 lb TVs. [rant]For me, this happened daily b/c my managers and pretty much all sales staff are useless [/rant].

Personally, I do these things b/c I care and I know that even small things mean a lot to people. So if a delivery person/installer/worker of any sort goes above and beyond, do you have to throw $20 (or more) at someone? Absolutely not, but turn about is fair play. Tips don't have to be extravagant, like hundreds of dollars, or tickets to something, but enough to get a couple of working men and women a decent lunch can make their day. Delivery personnel especially don't get to duck into the break room fridge all day, and driving around you may not even get a chance for a meal break, let alone know where you'll even be to eat that day.

At the least, be kind and polite. A drink offer alone is almost a guarantee to receive better service. If you don't tip, and receive good service or beyond, adjust the level of your thanks accordingly to acknowledge the effort of someone who really didn't have to do anything more than the maintain the status quo.

In response to some other posts, it does seem that tipping for everything is a very American thing to do. I am an American with limited travel experience thus far, but from what I read and observe, some find it down-right weird, even (especially?) if they're the ones being offered a tip. It also seems that people who have worked a positioned that received tips, regardless of circumstance, is both more appreciative in receiving them, and generous in passing them on. Personally I can think of a lot of people who could just use a plain old life lesson by working 1 week for tips.
