Default How About To The "right" Instead?

As others have stated putting a DLP on top of the fireplace may be a bit awkward. I agreed with that from the beginning but didn't really say anything as you seemed to really be pushing for that idea. Now on to the ideas!

What would happen if you rotated your whole setup 90 degrees to the wall opposite the two windows that are to the left of the couch in one of your pictures.

You could place the tv on the floor and some floor standing front speakers next to it. You would need some sort of storage or rack for all your entertainment system pieces (blu-ray player, receiver, etc). This would open up the spot above the fireplace for some sort of cool art work (painting or maybe a movie poster of some sort if you are going for strictly just a home theater room).
Great idea, but I see 2 windows to the left of the fireplace on that wall. I was thinking the same thing earlier, but for the RIGHT Side, or maybe at the Opposite End of the fireplace wall -- if that is feasible? -- NOTE: My brother has a 52" DLP in his basement. He had a carpenter friend build & install a corner Shelf that held it up and in place, angled slightly down for the viewing area. There is a 8" or so Ledge all the way around the room, and he built it over that, with component cabinetry below. The seating is approx. 10-14' (?) away, and it looks Fine. He has 2 windows to the left but are not too close to the TV (no glare), and 2 at the far Opposite end of the room. Just a thought if you were thinking of putting it in 1 of the corners -- though it'd be better most of us seem to think being against or on, one of the walls.

** EDIT--as Homer would say, "DOH!!" -- I just re-read your post where you wrote OPPOSITE the 2 side windows. (smacks self upside the head...)

I would hate to have to move the gas logs to the corner. I refuse to put the TV in the corner.

If I place the TV on the opposite wall from the gas logs then the back of the couch will only be about 4.5-6' from the gas logs.

Yeah I know. Its just with a corner TV the speakers would never be "right" and it would annoy the crap out of me.

I Hear ya' brother! Excuse me if you addressed this already, but are the gas logs you mention, at the Opposite end from the Fireplace or to the right/left of the fireplace location? -- Reason being, as I noted earlier, one poss. place was the Opp End of the fireplace, if space permitted.

If I had this room, I will use the wall to the right of the fireplace (the long flat wall). Putting any TV on top of a fireplace is just way too high and I really dont understand why most new houses have this arrangement.

But if I really had this room, I will put blackout curtains on that window and use a projector with the screen mounted on the wall I suggest before...similar to what I have in my HT gallery.

Seriously, nice room dude.

I am afraid if I put the TV on the long flat wall to the right of the fireplace the seating will be too close to the door on the wall to the left of the fireplace.

Setup 2(Couch 8' from TV 4' from doors)

Setup 3(couch 7-7.5' from gas logs, 8-8.5 from TV-too close)

hahaha... sorry man. I had extra $$$ from income tax return this year and decided to just do the renovation myself.

But back to the OP.... seriously, you will be looking up a lot if you put a TV on top of that fireplace...so avoid at all cost!

edit: I still say Setup 2 for you.

-8ft seating distance is perfect for anything less than 50".
-In my old apt., I had my 55" TV at 9ft away.
-in my basement, i sit at 13.5ft from a 110" screen.

see this seating distance calculator:
http://myhometheater.homestead.com/v...alculator.html

edit 2: after doing the calculator, with a 60" TV, the recommended seating distance by THX is 6.7ft so you're good.

Yeah. Guess I gotta wait till we get in in 2 weeks to get the final placement. Trying to get a jumpstart on it.

Leaning towards option 3.

I'll be Hiring YOU IF I Do win any lottery---Great Job again!

FYI - topic at hand -- I'm 8-8.5' away from my 50" DLP and it works fine for my viewing. Food for thought as they say, right?

PS:
Maybe you should contact our friend above, fly him in for an estimate, and give him the gig!

Excellent use of Sketchup! I use it pretty often at work, and it's not only fun to use but can do some really neat things as well.

One question about your future setup...
Have you considered using in-wall speakers?

I think the spacing and location is excellent, but the in-walls might clean it up a bit.

The L/R speakers can go either under each window, or on the outer edge of each window. The Center channel I was thinking if I had a built in or ledge just under the TV it could go there.
Example

Good use of diagrams before building it. That is very commendable and better than most. I just have a couple of suggestions you might want to consider.

1. If you're building shelves to house the equipment under each window, I'd place your bookshelf speakers on the shelf instead of mounting them to the wall. I think you'll find the sound will improve noticeably if you push the speakers forward and have some distance between the back wall and your speakers.

2. It is what it is, but I don't think you'll be very happy having a DLP rear projector sitting above your fireplace. While DLP rear projectors maintain a fairly wide viewing angle for good contrast, it drops noticably when you move up or down in the viewing axis. DLPs should ideally be placed with eye level equal to the middle height of the screen.

3. I would suggest giving Darwin316's room placement idea some thought. Rotating the room orientation and placing the TV and gear on the right side wall will alleviate a lot of potential problems. That room layout is very similar to my first floor den, and that is how I have my 2 channel setup and 32" LCD oriented. You'll have a better chance of managing lighting control, heat issues, and the placement of the TV and speakers.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

I didnt even think about the DLP viewing angle until mentioned earlier in this thread. I am leaning either towards flipping the TV to the opposite wall from the gas logs or rotating it to the wall to the right of the logs.

The wall to the left of the logs has a double door entry into the room that I have to content with.

Default Nice !!

Now THAT's what i'm talking about! (note: I don't see a "Sub" in the drawing, but i'm sure you are planning to put it, or Them?, somewhere). 8-9' away, a 50" is probably as SMALL as you want to go. If "I" could though, I'd shoot for something bigger if your budget allows. Looks like you're going 7.1 then, right?

Too bad you can't push the couch back but with under 8' to the Fireplace, you're kind of stuck in the Hot Zone

Good Luck & send pics when you can as you progress!
