If I had this room, I will use the wall to the right of the fireplace (the long flat wall). Putting any TV on top of a fireplace is just way too high and I really dont understand why most new houses have this arrangement.
But if I really had this room, I will put blackout curtains on that window and use a projector with the screen mounted on the wall I suggest before...similar to what I have in my HT gallery. <---- |

But back to the OP.... seriously, you will be looking up a lot if you put a TV on top of that fireplace...so avoid at all cost! edit: I still say Setup 2 for you. -8ft seating distance is perfect for anything less than 50". -In my old apt., I had my 55" TV at 9ft away. -in my basement, i sit at 13.5ft from a 110" screen. see this seating distance calculator: http://myhometheater.homestead.com/v...alculator.html edit 2: after doing the calculator, with a 60" TV, the recommended seating distance by THX is 6.7ft so you're good. FYI - topic at hand -- I'm 8-8.5' away from my 50" DLP and it works fine for my viewing. Food for thought as they say, right? PS: Maybe you should contact our friend above, fly him in for an estimate, and give him the gig! ![]() |

Excellent use of Sketchup! I use it pretty often at work, and it's not only fun to use but can do some really neat things as well.
One question about your future setup... Have you considered using in-wall speakers? I think the spacing and location is excellent, but the in-walls might clean it up a bit. |

Good use of diagrams before building it. That is very commendable and better than most. I just have a couple of suggestions you might want to consider. 1. If you're building shelves to house the equipment under each window, I'd place your bookshelf speakers on the shelf instead of mounting them to the wall. I think you'll find the sound will improve noticeably if you push the speakers forward and have some distance between the back wall and your speakers. 2. It is what it is, but I don't think you'll be very happy having a DLP rear projector sitting above your fireplace. While DLP rear projectors maintain a fairly wide viewing angle for good contrast, it drops noticably when you move up or down in the viewing axis. DLPs should ideally be placed with eye level equal to the middle height of the screen. 3. I would suggest giving Darwin316's room placement idea some thought. Rotating the room orientation and placing the TV and gear on the right side wall will alleviate a lot of potential problems. That room layout is very similar to my first floor den, and that is how I have my 2 channel setup and 32" LCD oriented. You'll have a better chance of managing lighting control, heat issues, and the placement of the TV and speakers. Good luck. Keep us posted. |

I didnt even think about the DLP viewing angle until mentioned earlier in this thread. I am leaning either towards flipping the TV to the opposite wall from the gas logs or rotating it to the wall to the right of the logs.
The wall to the left of the logs has a double door entry into the room that I have to content with. |

Now THAT's what i'm talking about! (note: I don't see a "Sub" in the drawing, but i'm sure you are planning to put it, or Them?, somewhere). 8-9' away, a 50" is probably as SMALL as you want to go. If "I" could though, I'd shoot for something bigger if your budget allows. Looks like you're going 7.1 then, right?
Too bad you can't push the couch back but with under 8' to the Fireplace, you're kind of stuck in the Hot Zone ![]() Good Luck & send pics when you can as you progress! ![]() |
