Polk RM6750 and Monitor-50 questions - Blu-ray Forum

I am in the process of remodeling my basement and half of it will be a home theater. The space will be 11 x 24 feet. The TV will be on one end and the main seating will be about 14 to 15 feet back. This will be a set of recliners. There may be additional seating along the walls. There will be about 8 to 10 feet behind the seating. I am not sure what will be back there yet.

I have been buying audio components when I find them on sale. This is what I have so far.
Sony STR-DG820 7.1: $199

Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 home theater speaker system: $199

When the room is completed I plan to buy a Sony 52 inch XBR-6 and a Sony Blue Ray player.

I have two questions on the audio system.

1- Is the RM6750 5.1 good enough for this size room? I will be using two of the RM6750 speakers for the front speaker.
2- I may add two new speakers for the front speaker and use the RM6750 speakers for the surround and rear speakers to make a 7.1 system. The speakers that I am looking at are the Polk Audio Monitor 50's ($99 each). Will the Monitor 50's match up with the RM6750 system? The RM6750 system came with 4 satellite speakers, center speaker and sub-woofer.

3- If I go with the 7.1 system, where should the surround speakers be placed for this shape of room?

1. Personally, I don't think they're enough to properly power a room of that size. You may find differently, but while they're a steal at $199, they're still small satellite-style speakers.

2. No, the 50's will overpower the RM6750 center in my opinion. I can't say for sure, but I can say that the 60's sure did when I was in mid-upgrade. You can set the volume levels to help with that but... again, a full-sized speaker vs. a satellite. The surrounds for that could be ok though depending on your setup.

3. I personally wouldn't go with 7.1. There are lots of folks who love it, but I believe that money could be better spent improving the 5.1 setup in a room of that size.

Even with a set that big (and nice!) you're still sitting pretty far away. Maybe post some pics of your space and folks can help bring your setup a little closer? This could also help with your current speaker situation.

...sorry that my post has so many negatives in it, but I think you'll want to take my suggestions under advisement. The RM6750 set is good for small rooms.

I have the same Polk system for a much smaller room and had to upgrade the 8" sub to a 10" sub because the 8" sub flattened out during special effects (ie: explosions). I am much happier with the system now, but in your case I fear your room is too large for it. Personally I would say spend the extra money the first time around and go for more power or at least a 10" sub and better center channel.

I have the very same speakers and receiver in a fairly large, cathedral ceiling 'great room' (dining room and living room are not separate). I love them both, and they have performed magnificently over the last 3 months! Visitors are envious of the set-up (especially when I tell them they made a poor decision in buying Bose speakers).

My thoughts are that for the size of your room, and with it being a dedicated home theater space, you have the start of a good set-up.

The RM6750's are nice, and they work like a dream. If you plan on upgrading the fronts to Monitor 50's, you probably want to look to upgrade the center channel as well, as the 50's would probably overpower the 6750 center. Then, use the 6750 satellites as your rears and surrounds, and you'll be golden (sell the 6750 center on eBay or craigslist...probably get $50 for it).

The 820 is a solid receiver, and, again, is a great place to start. But for a dedicated home theater space, you'll probably get the upgrade itch after a while, as the power behind the 820 may not be enough to fill the space. But, you got a good deal, so I say enjoy for now and save for the future.

That said, a 52 inch TV when sitting 15 feet away may be a bit on the small side. You may want to look into 60 inches + for that set-up (seems large, but once you get it in there you'll be glad you go the bigger set). If budget is a concern, get the 52 inch, but move the seats up to 10 feet away.

I don't have the money to upgrade my total speaker system at this time due to the cost of the basement remodel. Would it be worth getting the Monitor-50's now and upgrading the center speaker at this time and us the surrounds and woofer for now.

Here is a layout of the room with the 5.1 system. In this picture the chairs are about 12 feet from the wall. This picture is to scale also. I hope I post the picture correctly. I assume if I go with the 7.1 system the surround speakers would move closer to the chairs.

May just be me, but again I wouldn't go 7.1 with that layout. You'd have to put speakers on stands behind which would possibly impede walking through, or you would have to ceiling mount them since you're not close to the walls.

However, I would say that going with the 50's and a different center is a viable upgrade. It's what I did, and I still am using the same sub- I haven't upgraded it yet. Using the Rm6750's as surrounds does a pretty good job. The sub will also do the trick and you can always upgrade it later if you want.

*edit* The CS1 or CS2 from Polk would be properly timbre-matched for the 50's.

Hi there, i'm also considering getting these RM6750's for the 199 + free shipping that newegg has going, as well as a TX-SR606 to go with it my room is only about 18x12, what wires am i going to need besides 100ft of 12 gauge speaker wire?

14ga would probably be fine. If you decide to go 12ga, consider getting some pin connectors to terminate the connection to the speakers. The clips on the speakers are hard enough to connect with 14ga (but still manageable). At 12ga I would think they would be too much.

Outside of that you'll need a subwoofer cable. Use this one- I just picked it up. Very high quality, plus it's properly shielded.
