I liked all three of the movies so it's a tough call. I thought American Gangster was really good. Scott captures the feel and look of the seventies perfectly. I was there and loved that era. Great performances from a top cast too. Of course The Departed and Casino are great too. Own all three someday.

I haven't seen American Gangster but from that list I would pick Casino. Just saw Donnie Brasco, another good mob film. The last good thing Pacino did IMO.

Get Casino. Departed is a mess of a story based on a very well done Hong Kong film called Infernal Affairs.

Casino then Departed.

I will never buy American Gangster. Hated the end.
[Show spoiler] Selling out his family and becoming friends with the cop.
End of Scarface, that's an ending. Even Henry Hill had a better ending, which was full of regret, in Goodfellas.

Better gangster movies than AG are Scarface, Carlito's Way, Goodfellas, Godfather 1-3, Donnnie Brasco and Once Upon a Time in America.

Can't wait until all are available in Blu.

Go with The Departed. Casino was good but it felt like he was trying to out do Goodfellas. American Gangster was ok.

Since I can't vote for all of the above as they are all great movies and I do own all three of them on Blu-ray I voted for American Gangster because it is my favorite of the 3 and I think Ridley Scott does a much better job of directing. That is my opinion anyway.

Definitely the Departed. The other two are average at best.

Love all of those. I would like to throw in Heat. It sort of a Gangster film. Sort of. But you can throw in Analyze This

Have to ask. Do you already have Goodfellas?

First of all, You do realize that was a true story about Frank Wallace and his rise and fall. Second of all he did NOT sell out his family. A member of his family sold him out and that is how he was arrested along with the rest of his family. Third, he didn't actually become "friends" with the cop, but he did work with detective Ritchie to bring down all the dirty cops that were taking pay offs from Lucas and other organized crime leaders in order to get a shorter (being eligible for parole) prison sentence.

true story or no, I didn't enjoy American Gangster either. Just because it's what actually happened doesn't mean it's the most compelling way to make the film.

I haven't seen Casino but I love the Departed and have to reccomend that, especially if you haven't seen it yet.

Get all three of them, they are all great films more than worthy of purchases.

This is like Sophie's Choice. How can I choose between my beloved children...errr...movies. Sheesh, why don't you throw in Godfather too.

I pick them all because they are all excellent movies at fantastic prices right now. Check out the Fry's sale.

BTW, gun to head I have to choose The Departed. Jack and Leo are the best.

But that is close because DeNiro and Pesci are damn good.

Casino, Donnie Brasco, Goodfellas, Blow and Untouchables are all based on real life crime stories as well. And they are good flicks, and have decent endings. Blow?

Just because American Gangster is a true story doesn't make the ending better.
[Show spoiler]Some may say I shouldn't talk about stuff I don't know, but here I go anyway. (I don't want to watch it again) I only saw it once, so my memory may have many holes, but I thought there was something about Denzel Washington testifying against his brothers/cousins along with other gangsters to reduce his time. Or was it by confessing to his crimes he got his family in hot water also?

Being a hard core gangster in the beginning of the film and then working with police may be closer to reality than Al Pacino blasting away with his little friend, but it just seemed like too much of a characteristic change. A complete turn around.

Also, to me he sure seemed buddy-buddy with Russel Crowe, who picked him up outside of the prision, didn't he?

I think they actually did become friends eventually, Ritchie became Frank's lawyer and if you watch the making of on the DVD its evident that they are friends.
