Well it either has to be 24p or 60Hz in Region A, no?

The PAL is 25/50

So if it's 24p it had to be slowed down. It can be a 25/50 to 30/60 standards conversion (like any Beatle clip from the UK or Dr. Who DVD in NTSC)

Just a week more.

I am recording Panet Earth to D-VHS. Based on what little I have seen so far, I would say it is a great series.

The reason I ask is, this show has been recorded in 25P, and since with HD there is no issue PAL/NTSC anymore, why would they convert it to 24/60? Especially since at some point they will release this in Europe as well. But it is a Warner title after all. Can HD-DVD do 25P/50Hz?

SO PUMPED for Planet Earth will be amazing and is a MUST BUY.

BLU RAY will Pummel HD and when it does, and HD you will look in the mirror the day after you remember who did this to you,

"Madness?, This is BLU-RAY!"

It's also worth mentioning that Planet Earth was apparently only shot in 720p, not 1080.

No. I read it on another forum, but the thread's gone now as it was off-topic. However, it was stated by a source I'd trust. Someone in the know at the Beeb. I hope for everyone's sake that the info is wrong, but I suspect not.

amazon pre-order. Had to get this on blu-ray since David Attenborough is narrating. Come one people, HD-DVD folks are buying this up at a higher rate than blu-ray according to amazon. As of right now, Planet Earth on HDDVD is #8 and the blu-ray version is #20 !

The question is can Region A, and more specifically the US, do 25/50?

The answer is no.
In the US I think 99% of displays can only do 60Hz. And most other countries in region A are 60Hz too (Altho I'm sure the display situation there is more flexible)

So even if the players sold in the US/Region A had 25/50 output enabled, which I don't think is the case for most players (maybe kjack can give us more info) most displays here wouldn't be able to accept it and the player would have to do the 25/50 -> 30/60 conversion (again maybe kjack could shed more light into this?)

The situation in PAL/50Hz countries (region B) is reversed, as far as I know multi standard TVs are common and HDTV displays are required to accept 50/60.

It was shot on various HD formats 720, 1080i, 1080p plus film, at various speeds.

And it was broadcast by the Beeb in AVC 19 Mb/s 1080i x 1440 according to sneals2000, a knowledgale bloke from the UK.

Here's a 1080 x 1400 capt I posted before on the PE thread:

I wasn't aware of that. You are right, most (if not all) displays here accept both 50Hz and 60Hz, so I assumed it would be the same 'over there'.

Just a little tidbit, Many Best Buy's are not getting this.

For example, in my district only 2 stores are getting it. And it's going to be $79.99+tax

You may want to call your local BB and see if/how many they are getting.

Undecided. I am sure the documentary is informative with gorgeous imagery. I just don't know how often I'd reach for it on the shelf and whether it lends itself to repeat viewing--my criteria for adding something to my library. It's not like I'd have some buddies over for some beers or a bottle of zin and watch this thing, and even less likely I'd put this on and cuddle up with a girlfriend in front of the plasma. And after a hard day's work I'd much rather use my PS3 for Fight Night round 3 than watch a documentary. That said, I may order it anyway.

Three hours every Sunday on Discovery and DiscoveryHD. This Sunday is the last one. Then the BD comes out.

My choice as well. There are plenty of movies coming out in the next few weeks to keep me busy. Planet Earth is great, but I am already watching it on Discovery.

Ahhh...is that all HD-DVD owners have to look forward to? So sad...

I disagree, IF anything...I could watch something like this...far more than I could say "Identity" or "The pursuit of happiness"...Documentaries require limited attention and you can drop off and pick up wherever & whenever you want. With 11 1/2 hours of HD content, it would be difficult to get "bored" of this IMO.

Funny me and my buddy were bored watching tv the otherday...we flip to discovery channel and PE was on. He says "ahh leave it here" we were amazed watching a polar bear go at it with a Walrus and then wacthing Sharks jump 6 feet out of water after seals, and nobody even hinted at changing the channel...we were captivated.

I know my gf would enjoy something like this, vs. say...
The Terminator. Women like "mother nature" too, and enjoy learning something, and can appreciate spectacular High Def content.

I guess differen't stroked for differen't folks. To me, I view gaming as a chore of sorts. And after a long day at work I would much rather veg out watching this, than stress out on the complexity of some of these games when I've been stressing out all day at work.

With that said....go buy it =)

If you are 100% going to buy it, then select the pre-order one. So we can atleast know who's getting it......and how they got it.
