You are probably in the wrong speaker terminals. I believe you want surround instead of surround back.

Thank you for this thread. I just bought myself a 606, and have had the Sony BDP-x1 which is the Costco branded 350, obviously hooked up through HDMI.

I set the BD audio setting to Direct instead of Mix. How about the other settings?

Audio ATT? On or OFF? (I assume off)

Dolby Digital? Downmix PCM or Dolby Digital (I assume the latter)

DTS? I assume DTS and not downmix.

48khz/16bit or 96khz/24bit -- I assume the higher one.

Anything else I need to know? Doing all of this triggers the TrueHD light on my 606, which is a good thing.

Did you run the Audyssey automatic speaker setup?? It will automatically detect your speaker configuration.

That happened to me on the 606. I kept failing the speaker setup with the microphone, and finally figured it out.

I am having the same problem (it seems to be quite a common one!) I have the BDP 350 set to "Direct". When outputting a TrueHD track multichannel linear PCM comes up on the Onkyo display. When other Dolby tracks are selected the red DD logo lights up. ANY DTS tracks come through as basic DTS. At least the red DTS icon is lighting up on the Onkyo.

It seems to me that the BDP is bitstreaming the usual DD and DTS tracks, but any HD tracks are being output as MLPCM. Is it because the player is saying that the Onkyo wont recognise HD tracks?? Because I am pretty sure the Onkyo decodes all formats.

All I want is for my BD player to output all tracks so I get the nice pretty TrueHD and DTS Master icons on my Onkyo. But seriously, I would like my Onkyo to do the decoding.

PLEASE HELP ME TO DO THIS.

These are my settings on the S350:

Audio Output Priority: HDMI
Audio(HDMI): Auto
BD Audio Setting: Direct
Audio ATT: Off
Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital
DTS: DTS
48KHz/96KHz PCM: 96KHz/24 bit
Audio DRC: Auto
Downmix: Dolby Surround

My Onkyo processes TrueHD and DTS-HD Master fine with these settings.

Thanks for your help. Those are the exact settings that I have on my 350, and it is still doing the stuff I described. I updated it through the internet, nothing has changed.

Is there some really important setting on the Onkyo that I am missing? I don't understand why these settings work for you, but not me.

I have connected it directly with an HDMI, so I dont think that is a problem.

Thanks again.

SOLVED!

I had all the settings correct, apart from one. Because I currently have my BDP connected to a bog-standard widescreen TV (before I upgrade to a shiny Panasonic LCD) I had the resolution set to 480i/576i. Changed it to 1080i and I get full HD bitstreamed to my Onkyo.

Excellent!

Thanks for your help.

I hope someone can help me!

I have a Panasonic BD35K with the Onkyo SR606 receiver. I have my receiver set to default factory settings. Like the previous poster, I only have the red Dolby and PLIIx on the display. How can I get TrueHD / DTS-HD?

Thank you in advance!

In the SOUND menu in SETUP:

Have you set the "BD Video Secondary Audio" to OFF? (It is factory preset to ON)

Have you set the "Dolby/True HD" and "DTS/DTS HD" to BITSTREAM?

I am having trouble getting the True HD/ DTS HD light to come on as well. Here is what I have: Onkyo TX-SR606 and a Sony BDP-S550 Blu Ray player. I have tried all the settings in this post without any success of getting the light to come on.
Here are my settings on the Sony BDP-S550 player:
Audio Output Priority: Optical
Audio (HDMI): Auto
BD Audio Setting: Direct
Audio ATT: Off
Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital
DTS: DTS
48kHz/96kHz: 96kHz/24 bit
Audio DRC: Auto
Downmix: Dolby Surround

Do you have to have HDMI for True HD/ DTS HD? Or will optical work? Are there settings on the Onkyo that need to be changed? Any help would be great! Thanks guys!

optical will not work for dolby true hd or DTS MA HD. Optical cables are not capable and do not offer enough bandwidth to carry the hd audio codecs. HDMI only

Hey guys, sorry to bump up a month old thread, but I'd just like to get some clarifgication on a similar issue. I'm trying to get TrueHD out from my PS3 to my new Onkyo SR606, but all I can get is Dolby Digital EX. Is my understanding correct that the PS3 is doing the decoding and simply sending a bitsteram to the receiver (does that make any sense at all?!). I'd prefer it if I could set the PS3 up so that it doesn't do any decoding, leaving it up to the receiver instead (so it'll make me feel like I didn't waste a lot of money!).

I'm using HDMI for all connections and a BR disc that supports TrueHD (Iron Man).

So, long story short. PS3 and Onkyo TX-SR606 using Iron Man BR disc. Not getting TrueHD... any solution?

Unfortunately the ps3 will not bitstream dts master and true hd. It decodes it and sends it to the receiver in PCM format. You are getting true hd but it will not say it on the 606. Until sony releases an update for that you will have to get a stand alone to display true hd and dts master on screen.

set the output on your ps3 to LPCM and not bitstream. The onkyo will display Multichan but you will be getting and will be hearing the hd codecs. The PS3 will never be able to send HD codecs via bitstream due to limitations with the hardware, there is nothing a firmware update can change about it.

Also when the movie is playing press the select button and the info screen will pop up, in the top right hand corner you can see what sound track you are listening to, it should show true hd or dts hd. You have to select the hd track on the ps3 for most titles.
