Mitsubishi HC5500 - 1080P projector, $1950 with a $300 rebate and a free lamp if gotten by 1/31. Seems like a steal to me, reviews for it are decent.
Here is a review of that one:

Well I could not pass up a two day sale from Best Buy this weekend. I picked up the Epson Home Cinema 6100 for $1699.00. ($300.00 off). This is the best price I have seen and can not imagine it being close to this price again soon. Now I just need to get the screen ($1300.00) 120" Elite Cinetension 2 Acoustic screen.

Do all these projectors do 24p? I was looking at the Sanyo PLV-Z2000 only due to cost. Any suggestions on it? It will be a simple system. I already have a 92" SI screen. I'm not that much of a screen freak but do want it to look good. I also would like it to do 24p to get a more film like look. Or what about the Sanyo PLV-Z3000 Projector?? It has automotion and A 65,000:1 contrast ratio?

Well I'm back on the hunt, and I started looking at projectors again and I came across some $999 projectors. $999 for a 1080p projector, that seems heavenly, right along my budget. Granted their not as good as these $2,000 - $3,000 models, but I'm willing to give 'em a try.

The projectors are:

BenQ W1000
Optoma HD20
Vivitek H1080FD
and the InFocus X10, which is slightly more costly.

I'm leaning toward the BenQ W1000 (but what is the uniformity for the BenQ? Anyone?) or the Vivitek H1080FD.

I own an Infocus X10 and that model is actually based off of higher end projectors (More of a mid range product), but the reason it cost so cheap is that it uses Dark Chip 1 technology to produce it's level of black (Infocus released 1080p projectors with Dark chip 3 and 4 chipsets, but they are virtually identical to the x10). It also is difficult to set up in small rooms if you want a big screen, as it uses a long throw lens that fills a 100 inch screen by 13 feet and 6 inches, 16 feet is it's farthest, and a pretty high offset. If you can manage some of it's set up quirks and Darkchip 1's lighter blacks, it's the best budget projector I've seen for it's price range, as it is closer to D6500 color range and better grayscale, shadow detail and good gamma, and the blacks can definately be improved with use of it's iris. It is also a very bright projector making it great for big screens, I even used it as an outdoor projector with the 165 inch screen (2.35 movies we move the screen up which technically makes it 156 inches) and it looks even better than my 96 inch screen and I had the iris slightly closed. Watch movies like Coraline or Braveheart and you'll see bigger is better. I have not seen any of the mentioned budget projectors, but they may not be as accurate as the Infocus, but they may have superior darkchip sets (Likely the optoma HD20 and Vivitek H1080FD have darkchip 2 sets, but the BenQ may have a darkchip 1 set, this is speculation though).
