That wouldn't be a bad idea but I still have to wait on tax refund money.

My 50" Samsung (720p) is great. It was under $1,000.

Okay, I have ruled out option 3 because my wife doesn't like the upgradeitis bug thing. She says if we get one now, we're not getting another one any time soon. She doesn't understand that a projector is not another tv...it's a projector. Oh well.

So now it's between the Samsung 56" DLP and the Panasonic 46" plasma. At the moment, I'm leaning towards the Plasma but am still hung up on the smaller screen and the higher power consumption. Plus, 6ave.com has the DLP on sale for $988 with free white glove delivery. The plasma is $1072 with free UPS ground (no white glove) delivery.

Why do the decisions about our toys have to be so difficult?

The power consumption concern is not as big of a deal as you may have been led to believe. With comparable sized sets (LCD & plasma), on 8 hrs/day, you're looking at ~$53 more per year to run the plasma. I imagine the numbers would be similar versus a DLP. Since you are looking at a larger DLP, power consumption would most likely be a wash (the bigger the set, the more power it uses). Something to think about. Personally, I'd go with the 46" Pany.

Barring any unforseen expenses, I think I have settled on the Panasonic TH-46PZ80u. Thanks to everyone for the help.

Now comes the task of reconfiguring my entertainment center. My current entertainment center was custom built for my Toshiba 42" rear projection tv. Obviously, a 46" Panasonic plasma is going to be bigger and won't fit. This means I get to build a new one.

Can someone do me a HUGE favor and measure how high the bottom edge of the screen is from the bottom of the stand. In other words, I need to know that if I set my center channel speaker right in front of the tv on the stand/cabinet, it won't block any of the picture.

Also, how far in front of the TV does the front edge of the stand protrude? In other words, how much farther forward will my center channel have to sit?

Thanks,

I ordered my new tv today... YAY!!!!

I purchased a Panasonic TH-46PZ85u from Amazon for $1099.98. Unfortunately, I missed the $1049 price that they had a few days ago but they still include free white glove delivery.

Now I just have to wait a week for them to deliver it.

In the meantime, I need to build my new tv stand.

I bought a Samsung LCD for $799. It was a great deal for a 40" 1080p LCD and I'm lovin it. The PQ was the same as the other competitors as I compared them.
