Band Of Brothers - Simply because it was cheap considering what it contained. I've watched the show every year since 2001 and think I will be doing so for years to come. Plus the reviews made it sound just totally awesome... AND it's in a steelcase. ^^

Harry Potter movies - I saw an auction on eBay and thought I'd jump for it. All sealed and stuff so I figured "I'll just sell the DVDs". I want to show HP to my kids because they're a huge milestone in cinema's history, same will go for The Lord Of The Rings trilogy that I've already double-dipped for on DVD.

Chronicles Of Riddick - Out of sheer fascination for the story and the character that Vin Diesel embodies. Plus they were quite cheap and the video quality really makes the difference. Especially on Pitch Black.

The Shawshank Redemption - My DVD version was horrible, it looked like a poor VHS port... and the Blu-ray was like £10 off Amazon.co.uk (even though I'm kinda gutted with the Dolby Digital sound compared to the US's TrueHD) so I thought I'd get it. I love this movie SO much and everyone should have it or at least see it.

The Goonies - No real reason, I love the movie and hadn't paid a lot for the DVD back when I got it, same for the BD, twas cheap and exclusive to the UK back then so..

and finally

Terminator 2 - I don't know how to explain my undying adoration for this movie, it's just SO good. And technically speaking, the version I bought uses the best transfer there is known of the movie and thus it was something I needed to have in my collection. I'll just watch the bonus features from the Ultimate Edition DVD I bought several years ago.

But yeah as you can tell, I didn't comment on sound as I'm not yet able to completely make the best of HD audio. When that day comes, I'm sure my double dips will be fully justified.

Sorry for my long replies, it's just something I've been having on my mind for a while and needed to get out I guess.

In the end, it just comes down to doing what makes you happy. If you're completely satisfied with your current DVD movies, then that's great! If not, then that's cool, too.

I've rebought a few things, but only select titles that I REALLY care about. All new movies will, of course, be Blu-ray only from here on out.

I still try to take it on a movie by movie basis. If it's something I'll only watch once every 5 or 6 years I won't worry too much about upgrading it. If it is worth it to me I've got no problem upgrading. If I never upgraded anything I would still have hundreds of VHS tapes lying around.

I love how all these arguments or "questions" about catalog movies on blu-ray never seem to ask about the audio, or never mention the audio when talking about DVD vs. blu-ray comparisons.

My guess is of the small population of movie enthusiasts that have actually bought into blu-ray, maybe 10 percent of those even know how to get lossless audio through their system, and maybe 40 percent of that group utilizes that capability.

So, the answer to the original question is this. You don't know what you're talking about. You mentioned 3 or 4 movies. There are more than a hundred catalog titles, at least, that look significantly better than their DVD counterpart. And almost ALL of them sound much better.

Read up, buddy.

I clearly stated in my posts that I wasn't able to fully enjoy lossless audio yet. I take it most people concentrate on video before audio since that's what's advertised foremost in comparison to audio systems.

I lok at multiple reviews before I purchase a catalogue title. Most releases of older fair on Blu get treated well. There are some instances when not.

For example movies like Terminator 2, Predator, Jaws, Robocop, all these classics that was already release on dvd years, why would you want to replace it with blu ray version? I watch Robocop in Blu ray and was disapointed. And it cost $10 more just because it is blu ray??? I did a comparison, the dvd version vs the blu ray version, and I hate to admit it, but on some way the dvd is just as good or better picture quality as the blu ray. Those movies were recorded in pre HD era so it was not made to be view in HD format. The closes is pop it in my Blu ray player and let it upscale.

For me, I just recently started my Blu ray library and I will not replace ANY of my DVD movies with blu ray. Movies that was made before the HD era is good enough on dvd with all the bonus features and special edition. Plus some of the newer blu ray release, it is bare bone compare to their dvd conterpart such as Terminator 2, Lion, Witch and Wardrobe, etc. Please dont flame on me, but I just want others input.
Have it your way they are your eye's.

If I love a movie and the transfer is great I don't think twice.

Halloween 78'
Dawn of the Dead 78'
Day of the Dead 85'
The Day the Earth Stood Still 51'
Young Frankenstein
Rambo Trilogy
Die Hard

These are just the ones I own from the 50's to the late 80's that all have fantastic transfers that look far superior to DVD.

Default It depends

I replaced Day the Earth Stood Still and the new one is incredibly clear and crisp. So clear you can see the wires when Gort picks up Patricia Neal. The movie is 58 years old and looks like it was made yesterday. It Came from Beneath the Sea is equally spectacular especially with the colorization. I don't think you can make a blanket generalisation about this subject it totally depends on the transfer. Its like when CD's replaced albums. The early transfers were dreadful tinny and with no bass until they got it down. Some digital remastering makes an incredible difference where as others sound awful but much less so now with CDs'. If they put the effort into it there is no question Blu ray is infinitely superior to DVD. I will replace only my favorites plus ones I don't have on DVD.

Everyone has their his/her own reasons for upgrading...or not. I told myself I wasnt going to buy many older movies, and I still havent....but damn...some of them look so much better on blu. I bought Robin Hood and there that movie is 70's yrs old or so, and looks kick ass. I probably still wont replace too many of them...but its all a matter of preference..cash...whatever.

I just know that when Oz comes out...I dont care how old it is..I dont care that I have bought it twice on dvd....it will get replaced.

LIke I said..each to his/her own.

Even some of the shoddiest transfers (Superman Returns, I'm looking in your direction) are miles better PQ wise than the best DVDs. I have not seen an upscaled DVD yet that fooled me into thinking I was watching BR.
