After having had the disc a couple of months and watching the film several times, i've come to conclusion that THE DARK KNIGHT is not a demo disc. There are some extremely impressive moments with the IMAX material yet and still this is not a consistent transfer. First of all the transfer is darker than standard, therefore obsureing details, due to this it has some inconsistent contrast in some segments.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad transfer, it's just not a home run that it should have been!

I'd almost say the audio is reference except for the fact we know it was down-rezzed to 16bit.

Forgot to mention: Although I still don't recommend it for demo, if you own the disc you have to show the Hospital explosion to anyone who doesn't have it. It just looks amazing.

No, dude, it's a wholly faithful transfer.

And the ONLY bad parts are the "regular" portions. This is because they were blown up for the IMAX print and treated digitally. All of the qualms about the edge enhancement do not mean that it is a bad transfer; it means that it was a bad master.

edit: wait nevermind. It's not WHOLLY faithful, because they DID change the aspect ratio of the IMAX stuff, but that's not what you were talking about anyway so it's not really relevant.

The Dark Knight is definitely a great film to show off the strength of Blu-ray. I, Robot, Sunshine, and Zodiac are also awesome selections too in terms of picture and sound quality.

I, Robot was fantastic even on DVD, so I could only imagine how stunning that is on Blu. Transformers and Speed Racer are phenomenal. The Planet Earth series -- which I've only seen on broadcast television in HD so far, as I'm waiting for my copy of the series to arrive from the UK -- is simply breathtaking. A DVD version of that will not hold a candle to Blu.

If they don't notice the difference between Blu and standard DVD in these movies, then there will be no convincing them.

Other fun ones: Wanted, Vantage Point, Hancock... I've got Mission Impossible in my Netflix queue right now. I imagine that will be pretty dang good.

I think Dark Knight looks great. It's just a little......well, DARK. LOL!! The IMAX stuff does look incredible though. Especially, all the detail/color in the clown masks at the beginning.
For pure pop, i don't think anything i've seen comes close to Kung Fu Panda. Even my cynical/movie snob friends were blown away. They even liked the actual movie. LOL!!

I've found that almost any recent movie works, provided you have the DVD to compare it to. Even if you don't have multiple inputs to your TV as has been suggested here, putting the DVD in first and then the blu-ray (to the same scene, of course) will usually elicit the desired "oooh aaaah" response.

Of course (as has also been said) - it likely won't be as mind-blowing on a 32". But it will be better... Good luck!

Yeah, TDK was ok in pic quality, but doesn't exactly pop. Kung Fu Panda or I hear Madagascar 2 are reference quality video and audio.

However, if you are watching on a projection TV or a non-calibrated set, you will probably not get the full impact of the video quality.

I'd go with something animated. Has she seen Kung-Fu Panda? Tinker Bell?

If you don't see the difference with those you're blind.
Werd. Cars is awesome.

The IMAX scenes, maybe. The rest of the film was good but not great. Especially the dark scenes.

3:10 to Yuma (given the Audio and Video) is still a very eye-opening movie amongst my friends/family..... The audio is amazing, and there are so many close-ups on the faces that reveal not only every little detail, but the make-up too...... it's just one of those films that people say "wow I wouldn't have seen that"

I think if you're looking just in terms of PQ, the older films usually wow people more than the new stuff......

The way I convinced my parents was with my dad's favorite movie. He watches The Hunt For Red October once a week at least and when he came to my place I showed it to him on Blu-ray on my 1080p LCD and he decided like that to get it. That's probably the best way, show people movies they really love.
