I am always a step ahead of my family with technology and my mom and step father are completely clueless when it comes to blu-ray. I tell them it holds 6x a normal DVD. Th resolution is better and sound is better. After explaining all this I get. Is it really worth it, though??
Yeah... I saw that my mom's next purchase on Netflix was The Dark Knight and I convinced her to switch it to the blu-ray. When she gets it... is this a good movie to get them understand how clear blu-ray is. Is the quality and sound clear enough they will be able to tell the difference on our 32' Sony HDTV My mom is also a fan of Dexter and Tru Blood so if The Dark Knight doesn't convince her... I don't know what will. |

your mom queued TDK?? wow, my parents would tell me to turn it off if i started it...your parents sound cool.
heck yeah its a great one, as Spolcyc said, great PQ, among the best of all Blu-rays. if you really want to convince them, get the DVD too, then switch between DVD and Blu-ray inputs on the TV...that should impress them ![]() The Fall and Baraka are phenomenal too. |

Err I wouldnt use DK as ref quality material. I would go with POTC, LFDH, King Kong, The Fall, Baraka, LOST [Season 3 or 4], Transformers, Hellboy 2, Casino Royale to name a few. Or if you wanna do classics then Blade Runner or Patton.

Exact same answer. Besides the shifting AR, the difference in quality is pretty massive (between the IMAX and Super 35).

No not at all, this is just another action movie, nothing really spectular to consider this THE best example of what Blu-Ray can do. Gotta go with an animation movie like Cars, Bee Movie or The Simpsons Movie. But even Speed Racer.

I have to agree that Planet Earth may be one that would convince them...but then, again, any parent that cues DK on netflix will enjoy it. My reference Blus , tho, are pixar movies like Cars and Wall-E. People are amazed at the detail when they watch these.

The Dark Knight is pretty Blu-ray demo material. That especially goes for the IMAX-sourced sequences. The image quality on those segments is every bit as good as any live action material on Blu-ray. The IMAX footage was scanned at 8K using the same machines used to create the 8K digital intermediate for Baraka. The Baraka project was really a test case of sorts by MPI to see if 8K was feasible for use and practical to use on The Dark Knight.
One thing I do for friends who just don't quite understand the differences between DVD and Blu-ray according to the numbers (345,000 pixels versus 2,073,600 pixels, 5X disc capacity, etc.) is simply just show them the difference. I have a handful of movies on both DVD and Blu-ray. I load the DVD version in my Sony upconverting DVD player and then load the Blu-ray version in my PS3 and sync both up to the same point in the movie -usually at the very beginning. Hit the play buttons at the same time and then just switch back and forth on the two HDMI source inputs going into the TV. They see the difference very clearly then. The DVD is kind of blurry, yet still jaggy with some pixels and the color is a little bland. The Blu-ray is much sharper, cleaner and much more brilliant in color quality. Anyone that sees the difference always goes with the Blu-ray version. |

I would say, if you have your walls/decor secured, then you could use TDK as a reference for your audio setup. I, for one, have problems with something on my components rattling at the beginning of TDK. My fault, not the movie.

DigitalfreakNYC I think you just mean shifting between IMAX and 35mm scenes not Super35 because I know Nolan only shoots on Anamorphic 35mm while it is harder to shoot with it it also reduces grain.

I agree, Transformers is better demo material than TDK. People love for the movie tends to them being indulgent on the transfert, which is just bloody awful, especially on the regular 2.35 parts.
The aspect shifting ratio is another fiasco, which will confuse newcomers to the format. Transformers all the way. |
