I believe i'm in the same situation as the OP, i bought the Onkyo 605 and later realized i wanted to add an amplifier to my setup. Currently i'm looking at the Yamaha 663 myself. Seems to be a great receiver for the money, and has Pre-Outs. Might be your best option for that price range.

My old receiver has them so I think I will get an amp first, if not happy I'll for a new recever aafter that. But I want to give my old AVR its day in court before it gets sentenced to life in a box, stuffed in a closet. Last edited by Brain Sturgeon; 03-10-2009 at 03:57 PM. |

Please elaborate. I feel my AVR can do what I want it to. So, I can save, a grand at least, by not buying a separte amp and a seperate receiver at this time. I can spend some nice cash on a nice amp and later down the road pick up the other piece. Also, it is easier to sneak Audio equipment by my wife one piece at a time. I know ![]() |

I went back some & you're receiver has Pre-outs right ! I would get the nice amp because you can upgrade the receiver down the road ! Because you're receiver is older , After you get the amp the only thing I would watch for would be If the receiver is getting to hot , IT may or may not ! My amps are cooler than my receiver & they have been on since 10:00 am . But my stuff is newer !! |

Looks like the only thing that you are missing currently from your receiver is the ability to pass everything through an HDMI output considering yours has none. What type of TV do you have? Is it 1080P? Just asking because I am trying to figure out how your setup currently is all hooked up. I am assuming you are taking an HDMI straight from your blu-ray player to the TV and then just letting the receiver handle the audio distribution?

As far as amplifiers are concerned, I keep hearing very positive things about Emotiva, their XPA-7 is the one i'm going to look into buying. About $500-600 there. |

About my purhases: 1. Bought PS3 to tide me over until Blu-ray players become more mainstream and have better loading time. In 2 years or so can buy the proper player. PS3 will move to other room with TV. 2. Bought 32" Tohiba Regza 32C3000G (made in Japan). I like Taiwan, but everyone reccomended buying Japanese is usually better. TV has 2 HDMI, more than I need now. TV had to fit in a Home Theater shelf that was built into the wall. No choice on size. TV is 720p, at this size it is fine, at time of purchase 1080p were all 37" and up. Good news, we just got a new home, no built in shelves, buisness is good, and my wife is going to let me buy a nice big 1080p 52" Sony, she says she can acept up to 100,000TWD about 2,800USD. Hopefully if things stay the way they are, I can get a new TV, 2 front speakers and an amp in here within a year. Next year will be new Blu-ray player (still waiting for a few generations to go by). However, everyhting costs twice as much for me. If I buy a 1000 dollar amp, she will buy a 1000 dollar purse. ![]() Old AVR, amp is 85W per channel. Good for what I have now. Not sure if it will be enough for the B&W704s that I've been dreaming about. |

You will be fine with a 85W amp you just won't be driving those speakers the way they should. Mainly you won't be able to turn the volume up and not start getting them to distort or hiss. As far as getting the HD audio codecs on your receiver you can check Crackinhedz thread about getting lossless audio with a receiver that doesn't have HDMI. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=17648 You might find some useful information there. As for the rest of the setup, I personally would go get a 1080P TV first that way you are set and can utilize the blu-ray video specs to their fullest. Ultimately you would probably want to get a newer receiver with HDMI capabilities and then find a good match in speakers.
