Viggo does look much better in a beard. At least he has that going for him.

That is a film I can see him getting behind. He really committed himself to that role, and I do believe he will reprise it if asked to (which I can't believe he hasn't been talked to already).

Plus, you can't exactly insert "Coke" or "Pepsi" into a film based in Middle Earth, now can you

Great post, toefer.

I know a lot of people are jumping on the "damned be the primadonna actors of Hollywood" train, and I can understand them being jaded, given Joaquin's antics. However, I've read many of Viggo's interviews and have thought him a very reasonable and down-to-Earth person. He has a devotion to his personal life, and it's nice to see him prioritizing things this way.

The first movie I saw him in is still one of my favorites: Crimson Tide

wow just stumbled upon this thread...that would be a shame, but if he wants to break, good for him. he is a phenomenal actor and has given a lot to the motion picture industry.

Viggo seems a decent man-- easy to see how he might give up the Hollywood life for something real. BTW, you Appaloosa critics have got to be kidding-- one of the most enjoyable westerns ever, IMO.

There are a lot of good actors out there, so if they want to quit acting. OK.

I thought Viggo said he'd do another Lord of the Rings film?

Huh? Isn't it just the Hobbit (two parts)?

This "news" makes me a bit skeptical.

Those seem like offhand comments spurred by frustration and more likely the end result is him continuing to be picky with his roles and only doing the stuff he really wants to.

Without the original interview text it's rather impossible to gleam anything useful from these few sentences. Words are twisted however the writer of the article wants to interpret things (I also don't see a link to the actual article). I tend to ignore comments from anyone that are out of context (without the exact question and full answer, it's out of context).

Wake me up when he actually announces he's quiting, then I'll mourn.

he rejected several roles in big budget movies, insisting he would never appear in a film just for the money. "They were often complete crap, all about product placement and marketing.

Gotta respect that.

Agreed. He will be missed. Hopefully he does come back for a few more films over the decades just because he wants to break in again.

A great movie up until Zellweger shows up, and then Ed Harris acts neutered until the last scene. It stops being about bringing Irons' character to justice (
[Show spoiler] when they release Irons from the train
) and starts being about Harris' relationship with his new girlfriend.
[Show spoiler] By the time Irons dies I had forgotten Irons was even in the movie. What a waste of a great actor.

That was my thoughts too, just take time off cause It seems to me more like he wants a break than to retire forever, which is more or less what he said. I than thought of Day Lewis since he only makes a money every few years I'm fine with that. I would have to bet that if anybody can get him to work again it will be Cronenberg when Eastern 2 is ready to roll.

And why does everybody here hate Appaloosa it was a very good western with nearly a perfect adaptation from the book. I am a huge fan of Appaloosa and Resolution and am very much looking forward to Brimstone. Ed Harris said he wanted to combine the last two into one movie. So somebody please tell me why the hate for Appaloosa.

These actors get paid way too much anyway. They do one movie and they make enough to retire for the rest of their lives.

I'm pretty sure I've read an interview stating that he is not actually quitting acting forever, but just for the time being. If Cronenberg wants him back for another project or Del Toro and Jackson wants him back for a cameo in The Hobbit or the Rings 'sequel', I think he'll be back.

Just by looking at his CV, it's pretty obvious that it was never about the money with Viggo - he had to be persuaded to accept the role of Aragorn for Christ's sake...
