Along with the size of the hard drive, the backwards compatibility was also taken away.

With a price-drop, slim down version and more big exclusives, the chances of PS3 catching up is still there.

I hope. At least for Japan if not anywhere else.

The bump is two fold, little software to move the Wii and some big hitters coming out on the PS3. This will likely just be a temporary bump.

The Wii has sold about 8 million in Japan while the PS3 has sold about 3 million. At the rate things are going, no, the PS3 will never be able to catch up to the Wii. If things go well for it, it might be able to outsell the Gamecube LTD though.

I don't think it's shocking, or even a victory, since the Wii has already sold in Japan in large enough numbers for every many woman and child to have a dozen Wii's each Ok...... an exaggeration obviously.... but yeah I think the Wii has pretty well saturated the Janpanese market, and probably faster than any console ever has, while the PS3 still has tons of growing room there.

Hopefully this is a indication of things to come, reason I say this is it makes no since why people buy the wii like they do. At some point it has to hit a saturation point, and if recent indicators are correct, I believe it is nearing that point. Not to be a bearer of bad news for the wii hopeful, but this generation has proven that one may not rule all.

Of course, that all depends on how long the Wii stays on the market (lifecycle) and how long they can keep sales up. I don't believe the Wii will go much beyond a 5 year lifecycle. That would leave the PS3 free to make huge gains for 4 or 5 years at whatever sales level they would be at during that time.

The most successful console in history is barely pulling in 4-5k a week in Japan. I don't think the PS3 has much hope of even getting those numbers.

Xbox 360 Sells Millionth Unit in Japan
PS3 pushes past three million, but all eyes are on Microsoft.
by John Tanaka

March 31, 2009 - Microsoft just achieved a major milestone in Japan. Three years and four months following the Xbox 360's release over there, the system has at long last crossed the million sold mark.

As reported today by Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, the mark was crossed in the week ending March 29. The 360 has now sold a total of 1,001,191 units since launch.

While a million units doesn't mean much of anything for Microsoft's worldwide Xbox business, in Japan it's a big feat for the brand. The original Xbox, after all, capped off at just around 500,000.

The 360 is still a distant third in the Japanese console race. Enterbrain also reported today that the PS3 has topped the three million mark, with total sales now at 3,009,395 units.

And above both systems, likely close to being able to swallow both twice over, is the Wii, which topped the seven million mark in November of last year.
Yes, this story was in the PS3 news section on IGN. Boy, no bias there. 3 1/2 years to sell a milliion consoles? Isn't that like one of those runners that finishes the New York Marathon several days after it started? And IGN are the poor suckers that have to keep the finish line open for them and applaud them, insisting "Yay! You're a winner too!!"

Gawd, I hate IGN. Just become a 360 exclusive site already.

My grumblings aside, PS3 FTW. A price cut will come. And a relative steady momentum will build. Hopefully this momentum will catch on Stateside.

well, it's obvious that it's the software selling the PS3 now, because i don't think there is anyone in the planet that brings home a PS3 and doesn't say "WHY IN SAM HELL DIDN'T I GET THIS THING BEFORE!?!?!"

so if nintendo drops in price, they'll only upset the current wii owners, their network issues will only escalate, and it's a sign of giving up. that is to say, they've made their billions and they will go on vacation now... much like it seemed was the case in last year's E3 for that matter lol.

also, this monster hunter better come out next week, because the FF13 cloud is already looming and in a few months the marketing will go mainstream and as everyone else has noticed, if RE5 caused this, imagine what FF13 will do. monster hunter is a sony reject franchise.

nintendo not only needs to drop the price of its console, but practicully cut the price of the peripherals in half. that's where avid consumers begin to notice that the Wii is as expensive as the PS3.

not surprising really... the Wii doesnt have the legs in my opinion.. we won a Wii for christmas and it got heavy use for one/two months.. and hasnt been switched on since, three work colleagues have the exact same story.. i feel sorry for one of them as he really wanted to get a ps3 but the kids were pushing for a Wii so he had to go for it..

as for the Wii there's hardly any games for it of any use.. .its coolness is the motion sensing.. take that away and your left with a few ace Nintendo titles but not a lot else..

there's never a day passes that the ps3 isnt on in our house.. either listening to musc, looking at photo's, playing back home video's or watching dvd/blu-ray... heck i even use it a fair bit for browsing the web as well... reading news sites etc... i tried that once on the Wii and well lets just say i didnt try it a second time

The Wii could be reaching saturation point.. i mean everyone i know has one.. whereas with the ps3.. well more and more people are catching onto it.. if it sees a price drop later in the year, with a slimmed down version.. then i think it will sell very well going into next christmas and beyond and the games are really coming into their own now..

an interesting Nielsen report showing how much use people get from their consoles...

http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/...40609_fnl1.pdf

the Wii only gets used half as much as the other two...

maybe Sony's strategy to hold firm on price will be justified.. they might get a much bigger bounce later in the year and they will make the same profits with a lower cost to manufacture machine..
